On a side note.. with Koistitsyn, Burmistrov, and now Kovalchuk jumping ship, this could severely affect players taken in the draft and signed as free agents. Teams aren't going to want to take them simply because they're Russian. This could be a disaster.

I agree...I'm almost glad in a way that the kings beat us, but we have to look at the bright side....that contract was HORRIBLE and very not njd like...this year will probably suck though....god we were so set for an awesome year...

Because of the ludicrous contract they signed him to circumvented the cba. Now the new cba is punishing teams caps for signing this contracts when they retire early.

Well they just got a 12 year, 77 million dollar contract off their books. Does that help?

Unless it contributes to your team being worse, less merchandise sales and dropping attendance by a significant percentage (see Blues trading Chirs Pronger and not getting equal value in return as an example)

Well to be fair Zherdev was known as a lazy player and Bryz was known as a bit of a headcase. There really was no indication that Kovy would do this.

The fallout from this, per Tom Gulitti:

Devils will be charged $250,000 vs. cap for each season through 2024-25 as the cap recapture penalty.

Devils do not have to pay Kovalchk if he's retired. Can void his contract once he officially retires.

Of course, Devils still have to give up first-round pick in 2014 for being found guilty of cap circumvention.

Prongers contract is an over 35 deal. His full cap hit would count against the cap. Hence him staying on LTIR.

Pronger was a 35+ contract so its on the books if he retires. With him injured, they can just place him on the LTIR every year.

There really wasn't any worry, it's just a matter if when. It's a common belief that he is going to retire in the KHL after his newest contract expires.
