Dont believe that is so, I am sure you need all your draft picks in consecutive years, cant jump or skip years. - DDM-Coga

These rules are applicable again. Nothing changed in the recent CBA, and compensation is tied to the salary cap, which is the same next year as it was then. |

Please no. I'd rather just enter the rebuild anyway. Without Kovy our offense has no leader. No RFA available would have changed that. Good players, but they wouldn't put us back to where we were and we'd be an average team with no first round pick for 3 years. AKA: On track to become the flames. No need to make a bad situation worse. - rmdevil313
Yea that is probably the smart choice |

Yeah man, we already got penalized for his contract being cap circumvention. We should be penalized for him deciding not to play anymore. We should lose our team because we suck go rangers. - MrToast
Sucks for New Jersey, but cap recapture should still apply. You got the benefit of not having a cap hit as high as his salary last year. |

Honestly Kovy also just screwed over a lot of future Russian prospects in my opinion.
Teams were already skeptical about drafting and signing Russian talent (see this year, Nichushkin)
After this? Forget about it. If I was a GM I'd always take a North American player over a Russian right now, it's not about racism, it's about the risk of a player you invested SO MUCH in just leaving for nothing.
I really want to say "Ah well knowing the Devils they'll now somehow have a great record next year with their terrible roster" but I just LOL at that because it's so not true. |

And that is exactly what the KHL wants. They are more likely to keep their players.

Yup. A couple of their prospects are already reluctant to come over, and another advantage is that they absolutely blow the ELC out of the water. It will be interesting to see how many russians are in the league in 10 years. |

Perhaps it's preemptive because the NHL doesn't want their players at the Olympics this year? |

If Kovy kept playing, his cap recapture number would be much higher. For losing Kovy, you are getting a much lower number. |

If he did this because he was homesick and wanted to be back with his family, then I cannot blame him at all. TO the people saying he left 77MM worth money on the table. TO the normal population that is crazy.
When you have the option like he does to make the same amount at home and be with your family or in another country and be unhappy, I would be willing to be most if not all would take the home version.
Now if this is strictly a cash grab then that is a whole different disgusting story. |

Incredible!! so Sorry.... but...
We here in STL remember the Scott Stevens Saga. Killed STL for years.
things do have a way of working back around!! - Stricknasty's Hero
That's completely different. St. Louis illegally spoke to Shanahan to sign him and the penalty was four 1st round picks, but Lou wanted Stevens so we got him eventually. Don't compare this to that. |

for those of you old enough to remember, tell me this team doesn't look like the 1995 devils. a bunch of no name kids, with a few grizzled vets that other teams thought were done. crash line in place, old and young goaltender splitting time. not saying they are a Stanley cup contender, but I do see a silver lining in the dark cloud that is ilya kovalchuk. |

Really wishing we moved the ninth pick for Ryan instead of Schneider this point will he wanna go through a rebuild likely not it would of been better to go with Marty and moose and wait to see how wedgie turns out and add lots more prospects in the following years but we will see I still think now Cory has to be the starter and Marty should understand why its no longer about loyalty cause we just seen what loyalty gets you. |

Sorry to see this happen Devils fans. If it happened to the Bruins I'd be going beserk right now. As I'm sure it has been said already, can't help but think the lockout created this situation, and that blows. |
