yep...no way in hell njd allow this...among MANY other teams...this is bad for the entire nhl...not just the devils - Xnightwish
So the Devils and Preds are victim of Russians scumbags. I'd worried if I were Columbus. Bob almost bailed this year, what's to stop him next year? |

Any team willing to build their team around a Russian after all the BS that has happened in the last 10 years is crazy.
When Datsyuk leaves for the KHL next season, we'll be doing this all over again only with wing fans as the dejected - Sheppy99

I think so.
Franchise finances. Knowing that theres no way he will be able to play til hes 44, meaning a rediculous cap penalty for like 4 or 5 years. Plus like you said, they can now lobby for getting the 1st round pick back, which they wont.
Theres a reason why Lou structured Kovys contract with 2 years @ 6 million in cash before the mega-money comes in. - aecliptic
Its until 42, and his salary actually goes up in the end. I don't think his recapture penalty would have been all that terrible. On top of that, Lou will most likely be long gone by then. |

I think regardless of the terminology of how this all went down, the KHL would have made an exception to whatever rule was holding them back. - rmdevil313
probably correct due to his age and skill level, he'll immediately become one of their league's selling points. What a Richard. 11 years in the NHL and to screw over a team like that.

Speechless..
I mean how can this guy leave his team and teammates high and dry like this. The organization is now in a real bad spot. Lou has his work cut out for him. |

Really, nothing, short of an agreement between the two leagues preventing this type of thing. I can't see the KHL entering into any type of agreement like that, especially now, with that league becoming a legit alternative for Russian players. NHL teams are just going to have to accept the risks when it comes to drafting and signing Russian guys. |

Isn't the cap recapture just a cap hit penalty, and not an actual fine? By the time Kovy retired there could be a completely new CBA and the recapture thing would be something of the past. I have a hard time imagining this is what the Devils wanted with no first round pick, actually looking decent this season, and the penalty only doubling to 500k. - rmdevil313
True but my thinking with the cap recapture is if the new group of investors/owners come in and want to spend to the cap, a smaller recapture penalty is better. My point on the payment of 11 million should've been all I typed there.
Hope that makes sense. |

Parise, Clarkson, Kovalchuk ...gone ...NJ must be a great place to play. - broadstreet11
True but as soon as they the guys above are past their prime and looking for one last absurd contract they will be heading your way to Philly to underperform and get bought out after a few worthless seasons. |

Sedins too, but doubt they play anywhere else.
Always starts out looking great like this, but lots of guys will be re-signed and one or two could be traded if the team can't sign them and the new team will push to re-sign them instead. |

Kovy should of told Lou about this earlier... Lou could of traded him for E.Kane and Wheeler. Speaking of the Jets, Kovy is the 2nd russian to leave the NHL this off season, Burmistrov being the first. Damn bastards |
