Yeah, in the long run it's better he left now, but it puts them in a bad spot for the next couple of years.

You know what? DUMP THE SEASON and DRAFT MacDavid! He's the next Crosby, apparently!

Zero. Contract is now voided.

They do get hit with a $250k per year cap penalty for the new recapture thing.

Question... Since he retired before his contract runs out, are the devils getting hit with a cap penalty? I remember reading something about if a player retires before their contract runs out then they get a cap penalty

Edit: never mind, just saw this tweet

@reporterchris: The cap recapture penalty for the #devils will be just $250,000 per year for the next 12 seasons.

If the devils want any chance in being decent, they need to go after grabo and Brunner. Hell, even jagr wouldn't be bad now

the Devils will be FINE- they have Clarkson! Dude is a total stud. Well, I'm assuming so because nobody would get a contract like his without being a total All-Star.

I don't think they deserve to get it back... I would still make it stick... However if I'm weasel Gary I would be incensed that this is happening. Contracts should be honored between both leagues regardless of circumstance. I understand if he wants to leave.... Family matters more.... Pretty simple just make him pay back the devils half of what he earned.

Why should he have to pay anything back? He played for they years he was paid for. His contract wasn't even front loaded, the Devils got out of the big money years.

I bet the Devils get the pick back... Maybe they just get moved to the end of the first round or something, but I bet months down the road after everything has quieted down, the league makes it up to them.

Lou gets taken care of.

I'm saying if he goes and plays in the KHL he should be penalized, if he goes and plays amateur hockey or does whatever who cares.
Both leagues seemed to be miffed when it happens to them. That being said, Lou is terminating the contract so I guess it doesn't really hold up anything. He can do whatever he wants. This now confirms that you can mutually agree to terminate an NHL contract.

If they get pick back... I bet ya lots of GM's will be pissed but at the same time empathetic because losing a star player hurts. I would hate to see it
happen that the NHL looks after one of its good ol boys, it sets a bad precedent.

I would absolutely love to see Lu and Gillis come to this same conclusion... This will show how much balls Luongo has...and how much gillis has failed as a GM

I hope Grabovski and Jagr sign in New Jersey after this. They'll need a few good players and I bet Jagr won't lose a chance to be "the guy" in a franchise. He loves the attention and would do well if put with the right guys on the ice.

They shouldn't have been penalized like that it was just a contract it wasn't like they were cheating.

Did Vancouver get penalized as well?If not, it's unfair to the Devils franchise..

If you have a chance to pick Connor McDavid, you have to take it. This kid will be special.

I heard he said that he wants to play with Crosby and will not report to any team that drafts him except the pens

NHL drew the line somewhere... Devils had Kovy making under a mil for more than one season... Lu was at least at 1 mil... It's pretty lame I know, NHL had the loop hole and then they cover their butts by penalizing the devils. I'm surprised guys like Gary didn't think of things like what they tried... Preventing it from even happening. Should've drawn the line at 38 or something and then just allow two year deals from there on.

I don't think you can pull back the penalty... It is what it is, you have to show the Gm's you are stern.

If he retires from the NHL and goes to play in the KHL, he shouldn't be allowed back in the NHL at any point of his career and NJ shouldn't have to pay the rest of his contract. You shouldn't be allowed to double dip like that. They should get the pick back.
