Sarcasm. What has Elias done the past couple of years to earn his 5.5 mill, as well.

I really don't know how you can spend 20 + milly on your tender position and 2 players, and expect to be competitive.

3.5 for Ryder is not a great deal either

It's possible if you spend it on the right players. I'd say the Pens are a pretty damn competitive team:

Crosby, Sidney » $8,700,000
Malkin, Evgeni » $8,700,000
Fleury, M. » $5,000,000

Not many teams have two of the best players in the world on their team. I would say the pens are the exception

Boston then?

Chara, Zdeno » $6,916,667
Lucic, Milan » $6,000,000
Rask, Tuukka » $7,000,000

OK, so it's technically $83,000 short of being $20M, but cut me some slack here.

Fine, now compare the players mentioned on the Devils, to that mentioned from Pitt.

Well, that was my point...you have to spend it on the right players if you're going to put all your eggs in one basket...or three baskets I guess.

Chara was not even in Noris discussions, Rask, was just way over paid, and Lucic, is one of my favorites.

I don't like paying one player so much cash. And, I hate long term deals.

Sure, not all players getting big money are worth it, but the teams themselves are still competitive even if they're top-heavy with their cap hits. Add the Rangers in (over $20M between Nash, Richards and Lundqvist), and we're talking three of last season's eight playoff teams (in the East, obviously), and three of the four teams that made it to the second round -- which you could define as competitive. Not at all saying any or all those players on those teams are worth the money they're getting, or even that the teams themselves are happy with the contracts they gave those players. I'm just saying teams can still do some damage and find some success with that model. I agree it's certainly not ideal for the long term, and those teams, if they haven't already, will have to do some creative shuffling around in the years ahead to make it all work.

Edit -- or we can do three out of final four teams last season...Boston, Pitt and LA ($19.6M between Kopitar, Doughty and Quick).

Or you could just ignore me as I'm just being difficult for the sake of stirring up a debate
