Just doesn't seem right to penalize the team in this case - steve362
they still received a cap benefit from his contract.
he made $11M this year, cap hit was only $6.66M
if he played the next 5 years and then retired, Devils would take it right in the ass for a decade. at least $2.5M per year

OR before the Free Agent market opening up! Im sure Lou would have liked to have his 7mil in space to work with.
I'm sorry, but I get "he can do what he wants," but boy did he just (frank) that team and its fans hard. - markmark
yup
wouldn't be as bad if they had 1st overall to look forward too...
oops.

I guess the obvious response to that would be... would have been nice if he decided to do that before signing a 15 yr contract promising NOT to go play in Russia? - Big_Lightnin
what does the contract length matter?

It would imply commitment. Although it was only a means of circumvention. |

the Devils also (frank)ed themselves trying to cheat the cap system.
were the devils going to sign anyone even if he left before? what FA would they have gotten instead?

funny ass thing is, he only made $6M the first 2 years
and whatever protion of $11M he got his year...
hmm... now that makes me think something's fishy from the Devils side |

the length was just to get the cap hit down, thats the devils org doing, they wanted the benefit. i dont see a difference if he signed a 7 year one and left or 15 |

I have no sympathy for the team, they dug this hole and Kovi just decided to help them out using his excavator.
I do feel for the fans. Its going to be a rough ride for a couple years. |

pretty much the same here, it would suck to say lose Kessel for nothing right now.
but I dont blame Kovalchuk if he wants to go. i also dont feel bad for the org.
its not like he signed a big contract and then shot someone in the face and is a horrible person |

Devils never actually paid him any large amount of money.
Devils have been flirting with bankruptcy for 3-4 yrs now.
They signed him to a massive big-money contract, and never really had to pay any of it.
just seemed strange.
wouldn't be surprised if we learned ownership was whispering in his ear that retiring to KHL might not be a bad idea...

true, but Leafs have more than 1 player capable of scoring a goal more than once in a blue moon...
and they have their 1st next year
just sucks to be a Devils fan next year. |
