So how exactly does this work? He is just leaving all that money on the table? Can he return to the NHL ever and NOT play with the Devils?
- steve362

I wouldn't think so.

that would be massive cap circumvention. and a backdoor way of getting out of a contract.

I think if he comes back, his contract picks up where it left off.

I will wait for the TSN boys to tell me whether I am right.

Recapture penalty is almost nothing.

If you pretend that he got all his salary last year, it works out to a cap hit of $250,000 for the next 12 years.

If you pro-rate what he recieved, it will amount to even less.

but quite possibly losing a top-5 draft pick for nadda... that hurts.

I remember using that possibility on some jersey fans that were ripping the Kessel deal, and they said that with Kovalchuk that wouldn't happen.

L-O-L to those guys.

I would think because there is SO MUCH left it would come off.

Not cap circumvention here.

- Big_Lightnin

Its 250 000 against the cap until 2025.

He's under 35 years old, don't believe the cap hit stays.

Cap hit does not.

Cap hit "recapture penalty" does.

In the first three years of his contract (pretending he got full $ last year, which he did not) Devils paid him $3 million more than they "paid" in cap hit.

So you take that amount, and spread it evenly over the remaining years of his contract (12).

$250,000 per year for the next 12 years as a cap recapture penalty.

They cant.
Whether he retires or not....they broke a rule and should be penalized for it.

how would they possibly justify that to the other 29 teams?

"we fell bad for them?"

some of the responses in the devils thread are funny..people calling kovalchuck a loser and jerk, not even Devils fans, I can understand if they are upset. He can do what he wants, he Russian, if he wants to play in his home country who cares

you may have $250K per year, but to take it, you have to pay out $40M per year to a bunch of guys to skate around in a squished circle.

Just doesn't seem right to penalize the team in this case

I guess the obvious response to that would be... would have been nice if he decided to do that before signing a 15 yr contract promising NOT to go play in Russia?

That would be every non-playoff team.. So not a very bold prediction.

I think they'll make it this year though!! Maybe!!!

OR before the Free Agent market opening up! Im sure Lou would have liked to have his 7mil in space to work with.

I'm sorry, but I get "he can do what he wants," but boy did he just (frank) that team and its fans hard.
