Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure the new CBA insists on 23 guys on the roster.
Lemme do some checking. - Atomic Wedgie
what I found
23-man Roster
There may be a maximum of 23 players on each Club's playing roster at any one time from the commencement of the NHL regular season through the trade deadline. Prior to the start of the season, each Club must submit to the NHL its "Opening Day Playing Roster" which shall be comprised of not more than 23 players. Each Club must have a roster of at least 20 players, composed of 18 skaters and two goaltenders. Players on Injured Reserve do not count in the 23-man limit. |

Wasn't improving the defence the biggest need for them going into the offseason?
Subtracting from it would be a little disappointing I think. - robin_steele264
Few good prospects on D...don't want to clog it up for next couple years
Nonis even said in his presses D will be built over next 12-24months |

And what does our D look like without him? Even worse than it already is.
The guy can play reliably up and down all 3 pairings. For 2mil you cant seriously complain about it.
Our D is already in a bad state. You aren't going to get a Gunnar replacement for 1mil. - markmark
so you are agreeing with me? |

They're probably going to trade Liles for a bag of roasted peanuts. It won't be taking away from our defense because he almost never played last season anyway. - p_zub
I agree...... they won't get much for him cause of the contract but one of the bottom feeder teams will be able to use him |

Gunnar's the only damn in the entire organization that has any business playing with Phaneuf on the top pairing. - Big_Lightnin
accept he doesn't. On a great team he wouldn't any more than Dion would be playing 30 minutes on a great team. |

Played 76% of his minutes with Dion last year 5 on 5.
Didn't say he was a top pair D... Just that he is the only one who's reliable enough to put with Dion.
They might be forced to move him, but the D is worse next year if they do. |

Ya I just gave my phone the spiderman upgrade last week. Not happy. Have 90 days to make a claim with my replacement plan (glad I got that now..only been 7 months so I'm gonna be $200 ahead on the replacement)
Stupid me decided to get the only phone you can't get an Otterbox case - Big_Lightnin
I was actually just looking at those cases
Thinking about getting one. I didn't have a case on my last phone at all. I made it through half of freshman year and all of sophomore and junior year of college with a glass phone and no case. It was a victroy IMO, but now I think it's time for a case |

100% disagree with the Gunnarson analysis - senstroll
It'd kind of be fun to see Gunnarsson let go and replaced with Franson on the top pairing - if for no other reason than to demonstrate how valuable Gunnarsson is. He's one of the very few dmen the Leafs have that's capable of playing a responsible game in his own end.
I hope Franson takes the next step and becomes a 20+ minute guy that can play in all situations but he hasn't shown it yet - and I can't remove that image of the between the legs no look pass he threw out in the Boston series ...in his own zone. |

At some point he will be in demand, maybe not now, but as the season progresses and there are injuries to PMD then he can be moved. PMD's are not that easy to find, and he is a veteran. He will be serviceable to a team. |

If they retain some salary Liles is tradeable I think.
Could free up $2.5M or so |

We're talking about getting under the cap. You can't start the season over it. They are going to have to let someone go for sure. |

Our problem last year was keeping the puck out of our net. Bernier potentially helps that. D was not addressed and that was my biggest problem with this offseason so far.

Leafs have a weak D so your soloution is to get rid of one of their more stable defensemen.
That makes alot of sense.
