Great summary of how Freddie worked and why he was so important to the success of the Flyers during his seven seasons here. Mike Emrick called me last night as he was heading home from the selection committee meeting in Toronto to tell me how good both he and JD felt about this particular selection and how pleased that they both are that the votes were finally there to get him in. I'm sure that Pat Quinn who is now President of the HHoF (and who was also given his first coaching job by Freddie as an assistant with the Flyers in 1976) and Burkie, among others, were also especially strong advocates.

I also got an email this morning from Ray Shero thanking me for my HB blog from yesterday and telling me how very much this long belated honor means to him and other members of the Shero family. (Ray also said that he loved the story about Freddie wearing my glasses in his Flyers training camp picture.) Having been at Freddie's funeral in 1990 and hearing Ray's eulogy I know that his remarks on his dad's behalf at the Induction in November will be memorable indeed and I am awaiting hearing them with the same enthusiasm as I did Mark Howe's glorious yet humble speech in 2011. As Badger Bob Johnson said so often, Freddie's induction to the Hall will be another "great day for hockey"!!

Essentially a player files for arbitration, and makes his case with things like his performance, his leadership abilities, his value to the team, etc., as to why he thinks he deserves to be paid X amount to a neutral party. Then the third party takes everything into account and sets the players salary to a set amount that the team has no control over, and they have to deal with it.
- JAKEw1234

The team does not have to accept the arbitration award, they can "walk away" from it and the player becomes a UFA.

Their ownership has been a complete joke. I wouldn't be surprised if they're hoping for an offersheet to load up on picks.

Why wait for an offer sheet. If the Flyers can swing a trade for Bogosian why not do it?

This is the dumbest crap I've ever taken the time to read. Walking on the logo of a hockey team is disrespect, it's a tradition. I also admit that putting the logo on the floor is silly and I'm glad the Flyers haven't followed suit but again that's where some teams keep their logo, so I would choose to respect that. To call Justin Bieber his hero for doing this is just a reason to write nonsense. Bieber did it because he's an ignorant kid, not because he's some sort of badass. He did it accidentally and was unaware of the tradition. So somehow this makes Bieber this writers' hero? Cluelessly making a mistakes makes Justin Bieber cool?? Someone make this make sense to me.

No clue. They seem completely complacent lowballing players and being uninvolved in FA.

I'll just add also that the team gets to have it's say and present it's case also.

Coburn, Meszaros, Matt Read, 1st rounder in 2015, the rights to Jody Shelley and Mike Knuble, and $1mil to NSH for Shea Weber.

edit: Throw in a 7th rounder in 2016 if Poile still holds out.

Not enough because we no longer have the rights to Shelley or Knuble. I see where your going with this and I figured Matt Walker would get it done but we nolonger own his rights either.

Homer let slip the slotted three Centers at the presser yesterday. If a deal for Weber can be done without Couturier I'm all for it but that would be extremely unlikely.

The contract under the new CBA is pretty damn toxic though. Not sure NSH is going to get many calls on him.

Coburn, Mezaros, Read (if they can work out extension before), Schenn

Is that too much? 4 roster players to get Weber, and then they may be able to sign Gagne?

Thought provoking article.

i mentioned i'd prefer the flyers go this route a few days ago. glad to see the thought is picking up steam. weber was born to be a flyer with his style of play. I think nashville will listen to the flyers despite what occurred with the offer sheet. i'm not worried about that so much as what it will actually take to get weber.

Under the terms of the new CBA have done nothing really to help small market teams other then lessen the overall share of the pie to the players. No additional revenue sharing, free agency rules the same, and how revenue is defined hasn't changed from the old CBA. I have read articles that both sides expect the cap to increase around $6 million next summer.

The Preds stood up to the bully, but in reality they received very little relief from the new CBA to help level the financial playing field. I can see a lot of small market teams signing their young an upcoming players like a Roman Josi to help keep salary costs down.
