A blue line that would have consisted of Tinordi, Gorges, Subban and Mcdonagh would have been one of the deepest and well banced group of defensmen in the league

What's interesting to me, is that, right after Gainey made that trade, every hockey savey person on the planet knew what a bad trade it was for the Habs. Except Gainey.

Gainey is/was an idiot.

I think that's accurate

it all depends if Rangers want to buy a few years of Stepan's UFA eligibility like they did McDonaghs

6 years 24 million would be splendid, but probably a pipe dream

I would think something like 5/22m and 4/10m is fair for Stepan/Hagelin. I wouldn't re-sign Falk yet, I don't think he's much above an AHL level guy but we'll see.

Falk is gonna get a qualifying offer and will most likely take that... about 900k.

I'd be happier than a pig in sh!t, too. Money and job security....and a contract that ends when I would be 30? I'd have a Kool Aid smile too

My guess is Falk gets under the $975K threshold for Cap hit and starts the season along with Johnson in the Minors. That would eliminate both of their cap hits until we really need to call one of them up. Combined, they would cost 1.575M to have on the Rangers roster opening day, so I think we save that capspace until needed. Right now, with Powe and Asham headed to Conn, we have about $8.5M free. That should be good enough for Step, Hags, Zucc.

If Clarkson got 5.25m... I expect Callahan to be at the 6 million mark.

My guess is, we offer a little less to Stepan and give him a 4 year deal. Stepan qualifies for UFA the 2017-2018 season. We can opt to not buy any of his UFA years and give him a smaller contract than McDonagh, say 4.5M. He would then cash out in UFA.

that would be a dumb move. If your not gonna buy any UFA years then you do 1 year less than UFA status. Thus he is a RFA when his contract ends and gives us a chance to negotiate a long term deal with that safety net rather than being a pending UFA.

I know Cally is everything to us, but arbitration look primarily at scoring production, then intangibles next. Callahan still isn't in elite scoring category, he is a perennial 50-60pt. player. I don't think we will need to pay him more than 5.5M per. He only increased his scoring about 10pts. since he signed the 4.25M contract and he still gives us the same intangibles as before. IMO, the doesn't substantiate a 2M dollar raise.

Pleased they got this done. I think it's a fair deal for both sides and it's nice knowing he's going to be a Ranger for quite a while. Now let's get Step done and I'll be even happier.

He is a much more complete player than Clarky IMO. Granted Toronto overpaid, but still Callahan does a lot more to a team from a leadership/work ethic standpoint.

Oh I agree, unfortunately, much like the Norris trophy doesn't calculate completeness and looks mostly at scoring, usually arbitration does the same thing. Intangibles are factored but they usually first choose point production comparables to base off of.
