I just wonder how Calgary could make a huge push for Ryan O'Reilly, give him that crazy offer sheet, fail, have loads of cap space, and not be ringing Derek Stepan's agent's phone off the hook right about now. - jimbro83
I think it could be a combination of Stepan's public comments about how he wants to be a Ranger for life and also the clout of the GM involved, Sather being this case. I don't think Calgary cared about stepping on the toes of Colorado, but pissing off Glen Sather is probably not something you want to do, especially when he has an endless pocket to hurt you with. |

yeah, once Stepan is signed then it will be much easier to see the overall picture - jimbro83
Exactly. If I am Sather I am working on 3 things. Locking up the RFAs to friendly deals, trying to extend Hank as that lets me plan as well, and trying to clear some of the brush, as Pete puts it, in seeing if I can ship some bodies out for minor leaguers or preferably picks as that frees up a contract out of the max of 50. But that's it.
Once those 3 things get done THEN I can look at the bigger stuff. I am not going to look at taking on money beyond 2014 without knowing what Step and Hank will be paid then. Just not happening.
I know we want to discuss trades and team improvements but building a winner means doing this "boring" stuff and doing it right. All the other stuff is fantasy, and again, that's what NHL13 is for where I can trade MDZ Boyle and 4 first rounders for Claude Giroux |

Everyone on Twitter complaining that stepan should have been first...don't think they realize hags was a lot more vulnerable to an offer sheet. |

Bridge contract. NHL GMs are making the mistake of skipping that second contract. You can only do it for a star and when it makes sense like Mac. |

Beautiful, that leaves about 6.25M of Space for Step, Zucc, and Falk (who could start in AHL). I think we are all set, shouldn't be a problem now to get them all!! Getting Zucc signed wil make me very happy. I think Zucc is very susceptible to an offer sheet right now. If someone does a 2M sheet, we lose him. Zucc should be next, no one will offer sheet Stepan.

$6.1M for Step, Falk and Zucc. Step $4, Falk $1. Zucc you hold until you move Pyatt for pucks and then $1.3M for Zucc. Call it an offseason.
EDIT: $6.75 actually. |

I think we have closer to 6.75M left right now, factoring 925K off for each Asham and Powe, and Johnson 600K will probably start in AHL. |

Zucc is apparently filling for arbitration. |
