So here we have it. Next years cap situation. "Everyone" is saying that the cap will increase by at least 6mil next year and be up somewhere around 70-71mil. So lets hope as rangers fan that this increase happens and we are at 70mil.

Below are the players under contract for next year:

Forwards:
Nash 7.8mil
Dorsett 1.6mil

Defenseman:
McDonough 4.7mil

I am saying the rangers will buy out Richards(6.7) next year and will trade Marc Staal (4mil) either this trade deadline or next offseason. Otherwise, the team would not be possible and would have to "blown up"in order to keep these two players (more on this later on). There are still RFA's that need signed before this season that are I think are imperative to a successful Rangers team in the coming years. These are estimations of what they could sign for

Stepan 4.5 mil x 5-6yrs
Hagelin 3 mil x 3-4yrs
MZA 2 mil x 2yrs

So now we have 23.6 million tied up in these 6 players alone for next year. Lets look at who the Rangers could definitely resign next year, current hit, RFA/UFA status and possible contract.

Player. Cap hit. RFA/UFA. Possible contract
Callahan 4.3 UFA. 6mil (hometown captain discount?)
Brassard 3.2 RFA. 4.5 mil (Stepan money?)
Kreider 1.3 RFA 3mil (still has size and potential)
Girardi 4 UFA. 5.5mil (deserves it, possibly more, solid D)
Del Zotto 2.5 RFA. 4mil (Girardi/Staal old contract?)
Stralman 1.7 UFA. 3 mil (not as good as DZ, but potential)
John Moore 1 RFA. 2.5mil (old DZ contract)
Lundqvist 6.9 UFA. 8 mil (hopefully that's all it will cost)

Now I know many people will say that some of the numbers should be more or less but at least it gives us a base for conversation. Also, some may disagree on the Rangers keeping some players (DZ, Kreider, Stralman) but with their cap hit relatively low compared to what it would take to replace them, I think they are a couple good pieces moving forward at reasonable cap hits who are also young (23,22,26) and still have potential.

So now we are at 60.1 million and have 14 players under contract. 8F's, 5D, 1G. At the very least to fill out the roster, they will need 4F's, 1D and 1G. And with a hopefully projected cap at 70 mil, this gives the rangers approximately 10mil to sign these six players. Lets not forget about some possible "kids" that the Rangers fans might think could make the roster either this year or next.

McIlrath 1.3 mil cap hit. Either he makes the team this year or next. If not, he's gone. After the 14-15 season he is RFA. I think he makes it and makes the jump to the NHL as a big bodied defenseman. So he makes the team and charges another 1.3 against the cap. 4F's and 1G. I'll say that two of these will make the team in the next year or two. JT Miller, Fasth, Lindberg, Kristo or Hrivik. On average just say 1mil cap charge. So that's 1.3mil for McIlrath and 2mil for two guys moving up to the big club.

The Rangers would have approximately 7mil to get 2F's and a backup goalie who is good enough to give the king some actual rest during the season. That doesn't even include any depth players in case someone gets hurt or guys to "round out the roster". This is why the Rangers will have no choice but to buyout Richards and trade Staal. Staal is under contract this year and next for 4mil per and would be expecting at least I would assume 5mil per. That would be almost 12mil for those two players alone. Rangers will have no choice but to part with both these players come trade deadline or offseason next year.

Cap Geek is pretty nifty for these sort of things. You can pretty much do what you want including create a player (so just to keep it general put UFA @ $3M). Makes it short and to the point so it is easy to read

I figured I didn't have to tell someone to keep reading. Usually someone reads something thoroughly before commenting. It mentions Staal's name twice, I figured I didn't have to emphasize it anymore. Sorry. I'll take better placement of the roster next time for you.

Just an Fyi, people tend to not read an entire block post like that and will just skim it.

Like mrhattrick27 said, you can do all that on cap geek as I do all the time when we propose trades and it's a whole lot more reader friendly

For all those wondering, minor league cap hits work like this:

Players making more than league minimum + 375K qualify for cap hit on NHL roster if they are sent to minors. However, their cap hit will be whatever overage past the threshold of the rule. The league minimum increases every year, but this year it is 550K. So the threshold is 925K. Anyone making more will have a cap hit less 925K. That means we basically save a maximum of 925K when sending players to the AHL, anything beyond that stays on the books. 35 and over players are even worse, they can only have a max of 100K buried. So Asham and Powe will each save us 925K. Ashams actual cap hit is gonna be 75K. Johnson's entire 600K will be off the books. Hopefully, Falk will be signed for 925K or less as well.

Maybe Jimbo should refrain from purchasing any more Ranger sweaters. We don't need any more bad luck befalling our players. Maybe he should try to be Malkin and Crosby sweaters.

I knew he was superior to us in every way; it's no wonder he is making a mint as a professional writer. His posts reeked of professionalism, an advanced knowledge of the sport no one else on this board could match and an intellect that is generational.

Actually, his posts just reeked.

Anyone who uses semi-colons like he did has to be an expert of the language. He did have an uncanny command of grammar.

He needed frequent breaks in thought, he was afraid his common sense was so quick that we might not get it. Thus the semi-colons.

Odd, I think it had the opposite effect. I can see how your theory makes sense but every time I would begin to read his post and it a semi-colon I hesitated to continue because I was trying to figure out why the hell he used a semi-colon in that spot. I'm no expert but there was no way he should have used even 1/4 of the semi-colons he did.

Sometimes I do think it is an initiation of sorts; only the strong and resilient return so we hope it weeds out those we won't want around here. I don't know; I'm reaching there but at least I tried to rationalize it.

Welcome to the site by the way. My wife is from Tahoe and knows Truckee quite well. Hopefully you stick around to talk Ranger hockey. Most of the time we're a good group here. There have been exceptions but few thankfully.
