And then Subban
- JAKEw1234

I think it's highly unlikely Subban reaches a point where people start discussing a trade of him.

Who doesn't want a cocky, overhyped player who undeservingly won a Norris Trophy who will command a king's ransom in a year?

I give Holmgren zero blame for Bryzgalov. He's not responsible. Bryzgalov was all Snider.

Bobrovsky is a complete Organizational failure. Laviolette, Holmgren, and Snider all are culpable.

- PLindbergh31

Snider told Holmgren to fix the goaltending once and for all 2 years ago at whatever cost. I don't think Snider knows enough to say anything more detailed than that. That leads into who thought Bryzgalov was going to be the end all solution to our goalie situation? I would say most likely Holmgren was the one determining that. The other issue is once Holmgren determined Bryz was the man to go after, he totally overestimated the goalie market and bid against himself for Bryz.

Snider is to blame somewhat because he put a big emphasis on fixing goaltending but the decisions after that is all on Holmgren. To say that Snider wanted Bryz and wanted to give him that abominous contract is wrong IMO.

how do you figure that out?
I thought they were UFA after age 27 or so many seasons played?

- Marc D

First seven seasons are under team control. His 3-year ELC + the first 4 years of his new deal. Final two seasons would have been UFA years.

Different situation, Pronger's on a 35+ contract.
- BulliesPhan87

Even if he wasn't on an over 35 deal, why would he retire and forfeit all that salary? He's getting paid $7 million this year, and $4 million next year.

The last two years he only gets $575,000 per season, so if there were no cap issues I could see him walking away from that. But not from $11 million.

He's a very dynamic player. He's not the best defensive defenseman, but he's still young and will eventually calm down. Pronger was difficult to handle early in his career as well.

With the recent Mike Smith and Bobrovsky contracts, I'd say Homer could've actually inflated the goalie market.

I have a feeling MDZ is going to try and break the bank. Also, Marc Staal basically admitted that he will never be 100% ever again.

The ridiculous term of the contract I would agree with. Holmgren was likely bidding against himself. But by Snider dictating to fix the goaltending at any cost implies go get the top guy on the market. Bryzgalov was that guy.

He's gone now, so it really doesn't matter who is at fault. They admitted their mistake and moved on.

Awesome defense, elite goalie. If only they delved into free agency and added more scoring away from their 1st line, and they'd have a solid team.

On McDonagh, as Brad says it is his 2nd contract, bridge type deal.
He is 23, so this contract includes two years of UFA where he could likely have gotten 7M on the UFA market.

Total deal 4.7 X 6 + 28.2 M

Assume 7M X 2 years for the 2 UFA years = 14 M

Leaves ~ 14+M for the first 4 years of the deal as his RFA bridge deal
which is a little more then 3.5M/year.

Pretty fair, really, for a top pair defenseman.

The one year they had a good team is the one year they had depth. Then they traded depth for Nash and put together a $20M top line.

If Weber had a career ending injury, what are the chances of him retiring, and walking away from all that money? And Giroux waslking away from that money? Not going to happen. Cap recapture is off the books in the case of a player getting a career ending injury. That risk no longer exists in that case. So therefore it is the same exact sitation as Giroux getting a career ending injury. And it would be the same, both player stuck on long term LTIR. So if we're going to worry about concussions and career ending injuries, they shouldn't have signed Giroux to an 8 year extension.
- MJL

If career ending injuries are not a factor, then I stand corrected.

Boston dismantled them in the playoffs, thus far I haven't seen the Rags do anything to improve their team.

I would agree, I would think Richards would bounce back some now that Tortorella is gone.

IMO I think the Defensive prospects are what they are, future verisons of Coburn-Meszaros-Grossmann. They will be 3-6 guys. Not that bad, every team needs these types of players. It sucks they used an 11th overall pick on one, but hey, whatever. What it does mean however is that in a few years we will be able to lower the cost of the defense. Istead of paying 4-6 d-man between 3.5-4 million, we will be able to pay them between 1-2 million for the same product. Much like how the Rangers were able to do for so long. That should allow us to trade for or sign the number 1 guy that we need. I still have no faith the Flyers can pick a franchise defenseman in the draft.
