Flyers/Rangers on the MSG channel. Forsure loss again. I'm pretty sure it's Meszaros last game of the season.

Watching Rick Nash makes me think it will be nice to have Lecavalier to stand up to him.

assuming we resign Gagne (Which is always a bad thing to do *knockonwood*, we definitely have one of the top forward corps in the entire league barring trade.

The more I think about it we may be looking at some type of coburn/ talbot trade combo. The hall signing and gagne (if it gets done) really creates a log jam in the bottom 6

I'm also noticing it's a good thing that we have so many switch hitters from wing to center or center to wing.

...-Giroux-...
Schenn-Lecavalier-...
...Couturier-Read
Talbot-Hall...

Just in case someone gets kicked out the draw.

His call on Gagne's Game 6 OT Winner vs TB was AWESOME. "He scores! we've got a game 7!"

I'd rather spend a contract slot retaining a guy they drafted (and like) in Wellwood (at least there's a chance he'll be back this season) than waste slots on a couple of the guys they decided to sign as UFAs.

Yann Danis is probably the best example... if he's only there to stabilize the Phantoms and provide some emergency insurance, why spend an NHL contract slot on that? There's going to be an abundance of AHL-level starters who will be willing to accept an AHL SPC (or PTO) later in the summer... why not just go that route? If either Emery or Mason then goes down, you'd still have a slot open to trade for another team's backup, or at worst, sign the starter in Adirondack to a pro-rated one-year deal. If the need never arises, you'd have that precious slot in your back pocket to use toward other needs.

- Tomahawk

You have to have a Goalie that you can call up as a backup in case of injuries. Every team needs to have that.

Adam Hall is another example... they already have Ben Holmstrom under contract and they just traded for Kris Newbury... both guys are good at the dot, above-average defensively, and have NHL experience. It's nice to have a guy available who is a high-50's faceoff guy, but Hall is not going to be on the ice for critical late-game, defensive draws against the other teams' top lines.... that's Giroux's territory. So if we're just talking about a guy who can win draws consistently against other teams' 3rd-4th lines, Holmstrom and/or Newbury seem to be perfectly capable of doing that.

- Tomahawk

The Hall signing was a great signing. And if Hall is on the bench for critical late game defensive draws, and Giroux is out there. That is a critical mistake by the Coaching staff. Giroux belongs on the bench in those situations. And players such as Hall and Couturier belong out there. Same for the PK. The Flyers should avoid using Giroux on the PK, and using a player like Hall a lot more. Giroux belongs in offensive zone start situations.

Sure, Hall's good for high-50% but during the course of 82-games, he's only going to take about 300-450 faceoffs because he's not going to see more than 8-10min of ice per game. That's only about a few dozen more faceoffs per year than a league-average 4th-line center (around 50%). Most of those draws will be inconsequential, maybe a handful will result in additional scoring chances against, and scarcely a couple could result in additional goals against... is that marginal difference really worth the use of a contract slot? I'm not sure.

If Couturier can get closer to 50% and Giroux stays in the mid-50's, the Flyers will have almost all of the critical, game-on-the-line faceoffs covered. Hall's faceoff prowess, while nice, just isn't the difference maker it's made out to be.

- Tomahawk

It think you're assuming a lot here incorrectly. If the Coaching staff uses Hall correctly. He should be taking the overwhelming majority of key draws on the PK. He replaces Fedetenko with Talbot on the main PK forward pair. I disagree completely that Hall's faceoff ability is not a difference maker. He's a player that you can put on the ice as a faceoff guy for key D zone draws, and make quick changes with the puck moving up ice. Hall was a key signing for the FLyers.

So Holmstrom was that guy to step in and do that? Or Kris Newbury was? No Hall won't be out there during the last minute of the game with a one goal lead, but maybe he is there in the D zone moreso than usual which gives G a rest to play that last minute in the 3rd, which he wouldn't have had otherwise.
- GirouxForTheShow

I don't see why Hall wouldn't be out there in the last minute in the 3rd with a one goal lead. A defensive draw in the Flyers zone, with the other team pulling their Goalie. Hall is the guy I have taking the faceoff.

You want to see Rosehill/Hall/Rinaldo out there against Stamkos to give G a rest?

Late in games, lines can be switched up. As they often are.

The woman guessed Claude Giroux.

really? And how many men answered correctly? Oh, wait. NONE. They asked one random person on a non-sports radio station and she was unaware of hockey players. What a shock! Call the police!

We regularly have people on Bill's threads asking questions that can be answered via Google and other such search sites. Nothing fazes me any more.
