I don't how you don't understand that on a game by game basis Gunnarsson or Kostka or Gardiner played minutes with Phanuef which drove their game by game totals up. For those minutes they were top pairing with Franson-Fraser two. Game by game means poop all.

and when Dion-Kostka and Gunnar-Liles play more ES minutes than Franson-Fraser, that means they were 1st, 2nd, and 3rd pairing.

and when it happens again with the first 4 names shuffled, but Franson and Fraser still together, and still playing the least ES minutes of the 3 pairings, they are again 3rd pairing.

and when that happens every game all season long, they are the 3rd pairing all season long.

doesn't mean they are the 3rd best pairing, but they played 3rd pairing minutes.

So does Holzer, and gunner doesn't make several of the better defensive teams. They don't have a top pairing. They have one guy who plays way more than he should because they don't have a choice.

Exactly. Players rotate in and out of the role with Phaneuf. He's the only top pairing constant with Franson and Fraser at two.

So now that he has filed for arbitration, does his agent tell him not to take a contract even if offered? If indeed the Leafs have to accept any deal under 3.5m, a good agent would tell him you won't get that much but you'll be awarded more than Nonis will give you on his own so just wait it out.

Might work, since both teams refuse to buy out those guys. Would also shore up the need for depth the Leafs are left with at the goalie position. Win - Win.
