nope. I base it on how he played. Slow, ineffective and unproductive. Enjoy it, this is similar to the Rolston signing for you except at that time Rolston actually looked productive. Clowe doesn't.

rangers fans say he suffered what looked like two concussions after the trade. Still happy?

While Marc Staal practiced with the New York Rangers on Saturday, fellow banged-up players Ryane Clowe and Darroll Powe did not.
Some believe that Clowe is dealing with a concussion related to a boarding hit by Jason Chimera in Game 5. Clowe suffered from a head injury in late April, so a recurrence would be of serious concern. He was finding a comfortable place with the Rangers following a trade, yet these issues could label him as a high risk in free agency this summer.

think about it again. 5 years. 4.8mil.

Except that DP's contract had another 8 years compared to Hamonic

Healys pissed b/c ricky will make more from his buyout than Glenn made his entire career. Screw him. Better hope he doesnt show his face at Coli or barclays. We wont forget. He just became #2 least fav former islander behind kirk muller.

this is funny. So a 22 y/o physical shut down defenseman playing top pairing against the other team's best lines every game, pk and 2nd unit pp isn't worth signing to a long term deal under 4 mil per that takes him until he's 29, but paying edler 5 mil per at age 27 when he plays on the second pairing and has an inconsistent physical game, makes huge defensive blunders and can score 40 points is much better? Obviously so, since the Canucks are trying to move Edler before he's even played a game under his new contract.

Clearly you didn't watch Hamonic take the body on crosby and malkin in the playoffs, and show more grit, heart and determination than anyone on the canucks.

But maybe you did notice for 3 months that your blogger had Hamonic listed as a target in every trade proposal blog he posted.

Less than 4 mil per year, plays top pairing, big minutes, top competition, contract takes him through 3 years of unrestricted eligibility and he's locked up.

Fantastic deal for us.

- Isles_since_6

It's Scooby...

You spend enough time in the Canucks blog to realize this is a blatant troll attempt.

Scooby would poop himself if the Canucks were able to get Hamonic.

Great player, and unless his play entirely drops of the map (highly unlikely), it's a great deal.

Also, I'd like to know what criteria, other than subjective opinion, you're using to grade grit, heart, and determination. Pretty bush league argument...

And you're wrong about Edler.

He gets the highest TOI of any Canucks D. That makes him top pairing.

And he may not be as consistently physical as Canucks fans would like, but he still puts up top3 hit totals on the team, leads the team in blocked shots, and has been very productive defensively for most of his career.

3.8M is good considering today's marketplace. I don't get the fuss. He's a good player. When I saw "long-term deal" I thought it would be more like 5M until I saw the terms.

Glen Healy is an absolute buffoon. This is the guy who, while giving his "expert" opinion on HNIC, claimed that intentionally trying to severely injure another player is "The right way to play the game".

Healy has never gotten over the way his Islander career ended at the hands of Don Maloney. His comments are nothing more than sour grapes. Unprofessional and irresponsible commentating in my opinion.

Healy is always complaining about something on that show, he has numerous times rubbed me the wrong way with his comments. I take the comments with a grain of salt.

There were rumors out there that some GM's might look to go the offer sheet route and that Hamonic could be a candidate for that. I might add that I have heard the same for Bailey. I would expect a long term extension for Bailey soon as well. Snow has done well to lock up his core guys to long term deals. If Healy had done his homework he would know that.

Massive overpayment. Should have signed him to a 3 year 5.5-6m deal. Signing players based on potential, when they've done nothing, is a recipe for disaster.

Hey Dee,

I enjoyed your article. I am sorry that you have to go up against the "Good Old Boys" on a regular basis. That being said, it's also the media's fault. Most of the women that I see on a sports program do not know that much about sports. If you look at them many are blonde, and look like models. They give commentary on the side lines or interview people, and they sound so ill informed or not interested in the sport. I get so frustrated at this, and wish that they would get somebody to host a show that actually knows about sports. Between you, and Christine Simpson, I am hard pressed to find another female media person that actually knows about hockey. I am grateful to see such women as yourselves so passionate about hockey, and the teams that you support. Don't get me wrong, I like looking at an attractive woman, just like any other guy, but I really don't want one talking to me about something that they know nothing about. In addition, I am getting tired of the ex-player commentator coming in, and sounding off like he is still playing the game or owns hockey. Why does every sporting event have to have a retired player telling me about how a trade stinks or is the greatest thing since sliced bread? Just give me the facts dude. Everyone has an opinion, and they are like ... you know. Dee, I am not a fan of the long term contracts, and the amount that are given to the players The player usually ends up getting hurt, or go to sleep until the contract is up (just look at Jagr when he played for the Caps). However, it's the owners fault for giving them these contracts. If everyone would just get together, and not give out those long term contracts, then the players would have to settle on the shorter term contracts. It's also the owners fault for giving them too much money. The players are just shooting themselves in the foot. They make such strange demands. Just look at all those guys getting crazy money for being average players (I don't even have to give an example about this one). Also, it ties up all the teams money into just a few contracts. Well, all the owners, and managers know about the cap space, so why complain. It's a strange way to do business guys. The only thing that is separating hockey from the other sports is the Cup. Are we now going to put the cup in a display case, and not let anyone touch it again?
Sorry, I just continued on there a little bit, but I understand your frustration Dee. Keep chipping away at the stone, and maybe one day things will change. I love hockey, and the Cup; however, money, egos, and sexy announcers have really given hockey a black eye.

Edler is better than Hamonic...and Edler is first pairing not 4/5 like Hamonic would be on most playoff teams.

So basically you hit up ESPN and see he has put up 20 pts in each of his 1st two years and you say he has done nothing. Right. Try watching some games. Hamonic has become the Islanders best defenseman. He isn't going to light up the scoresheet but he hits hard, plays sound defense and opposing players can't stand playing against him. He plays against the other teams top lines too.

This was a major win for the Islanders to have their franchise player and best defender locked up long term for less than $10m per year. If only Garth could do as well on the FA market as he does in signing his own guys.... oh well one can dream.

How could you be so sure???? I like Edler and good D-man, but Hamonic is a completely different type of player. So honestly you really can not compare the 2, but if you had to choose between them, it all depends on how/what you are constructing on D. But in fairness, if it came down to contract, hands down Hamonic has the better manageable contract.

Hammer plays a D-1st mentality, Edler plays a O-1st mentality and that's his role.
Also I do not know the age difference but Hammer seams to be progressing every year when Edler relies on your top 6 for producing.....

biggest steal of a contract I've seen this year. Hamonic's a top pairing D man n their paying him under 4M in his UFA years. Absolute steal.

Hamonic's a top pairing D. I'll take Hamonic considering age, salary, and ability to play defence over Edler

Glen Healy, what does he know? Hamonic is a beast; he's the core of this young defense. Hamonic logs big minutes against top lines and his physical game is right where it needs to be. Anyone who doesn't agree with this deal is obviously ignorant, doesn't watch the Isles often, or is just plain (frank)ing stupid.
