Sure compete with Kelfbom, Nurse, Marincin, NSchultz, Potter, Belov...probably a player or two more,

Right now he is odds on going to the Barons. And I don't have an issue with him, I liked his stat line...not high on points, but I liked his hits level for the few games and bottom pairing minutes he got.

- OilHorse

Nurse and Marincin are not competition for him at all IMO. Take my word for it.

He will be an Oiler. They won't lose him to waivers. Your right though, he's basically gotta fight Belov and Potter for ice time.

Oh really? Do advance stats show the fire in a guys eyes? Do they show the difference between a light hit and knocking a guy on his ass?can you show me numbers that provide evidence that defender A is terrified when attacker B is coming over the blue line? Nope. Intangibles. Gotta watch the game to understand them.
- Jeropotato

They can imply and hint at those things.

But saying or implying that advanced stats are useless is equally as dumb as basing an entire opinion on them.

Ference hasn't been on the 2nd pairing since the Cup victory. He's been on their third pairing the last 2 seasons because his play declined a bit and Boychuk emerged as really good.
- DTF69

3rd most minutes for a defenseman on Boston in this years playoffs.

Don't take offense if I don't. Not saying your are wrong with those two, but sometimes you just never know...Nurse will most likely go back to Jr (and rightly so)...but the future is undetermined

And you forgot Kelfbom...just FYI

watchin it on TV shows fire in a guys eyes? Intangibles are a small part of hockey. I'll take the more skilled player over the character player. See: Conn smythe winner
- TheNugeIsHuge

Call me old fashioned, but I'll hire 10 scouts to watch the games before I employ some college stats nerd. Just saying. They have their place, but your dead wrong on the intangible factors.skilled guys ain't poop without the character guys and vice versa. See :Edmonton Oilers 2012-2013

I never implied that. They have their usefulness .

Klefbom will be in AHL strictly due to numbers I think; ditto Marincin. They both need to play huge minutes and can get their cup of coffee when injuries pile up. Nurse back in Junior.

No offense taken bud. I don't come in here trying to sound like a know it all. But Larsen did play for my favorite team. I figured if anything, you guys would want an opinion on him from someone who's seen him play a lot.

We actually considered him untouchable at one point. Weve been very high on him. After drafting Oleksiak and adding guys like Gaunce, Morrow (now gone, yes), Connauton, Nemeth, etc.....he became expendable.

lol. I think Maloney slaps you across the face for that offer
- TheNugeIsHuge

Probably true but I wondered now that they have Rebeiro if he would have Doan for RW and Hemmer could play RW with Hanzal.

We still need a top pairing D man.

if a guy's great, it shows on advanced stats. if a guy is great but having bad luck, it shows on advanced stats. if a guy doesn't give a sh*t, everyone knows

Sure, but wouldn't you rather just watch the game? I understand the value of reading stats, I just think its kinda boring, and doesn't make for interesting discussion. Basically why I skip over the Willis blogs on ON.im a hockey fan, not a stats fan.

Getting back to the point guys have been making about offer sheeting guys, I thought of something. If team A (let's say Philly just because Philly fans are fun) puts in an offer sheet on a player on team B (let's say Stewart from St. Louis) and St. Louis decides they don't want to match. Could St. Louis trade him to Edmonton (dare to dream) for a package they like better than the applicable picks for the offer sheet? Assuming then Edmonton would need to match the offer sheet. I'm looking for an answer to the hypothetical situation not an assessment of whether it would actually happen

I trust the professionals to have an idea about who they are getting, i just look at the stat line (not advanced stats, that poop is just overly complex)...I looks at how much he plays, minutes and games. I loook at his scoring and his hits. i also compare give and take.

The kid didn't play many games last year, but has put in enough games to get a read on him. He is not an offensive minded Dman, but I think he will get 20-30 if given enough playtime in a season.

He has a solid number of hits, especially considering his youth adn lack of playtime. Won't clock 200 hits, but I could see 120+ in a full season.

I don't have an issue with him.

As soon as the offer sheet is accepted by the player I think only Team A and B can own his rights until it is complete. If Team B does not match then the player is not theirs to trade.

Not 100% though

Not saying you don't , I just think arguing the value of a player your not familiar with based on what you see in stats to someone who actually watched him play is lame. Take Ryan Jones for example. No idea what his stats say and I don't care. There are things I appreciate about his game, even if they are not effective, no stat can tell me he doesn't work hard.

They can't trade him, and if they match they can't trade him for a year.

Yes, wasn't worried about the part if they match...wasn't really relevant to the question

Can tell you right now Flyers aren't touching their D again unless their getting blown away. Homer said today with a strong bounceback from Meszaros, well have one of the better bluelines in hockey.

Streit-Schenn
Timonen-Coburn
Gustafson-Grossman
Meszaros-Gervais
Bourdon-Lauridsen

The only person on your entire blue-line that can do that is Justin Schultz. We literally don't need anymore defensemen.

- mochoson

Sorry buddy. I like you and welcome you in our threads but youre rarely correct.

I'm saying I watch the game and pay attention to the stats and they're extremely accurate.

I'm not a Jones fan. He's got poor defensive coverage n falls aaaall the time. People like him because he puts in 200%, but that doesn't matter if you're ineffective. Which is probably why EDM isn't re signing him

It isn't? My bad, I thought the question was if your player gets offer sheeted can you trade him before its resolved?

It was...but the question seemed revolved around trading said player because the team will not be matching, so the case of matching and not being able to trade for a year is extraneous information.

I don't think belov is even I. Question in terms of roster, after we signed him I did a bunch of research on the guy and he is a pretty fine player, best case scenario he gets top four minutes, I think he is almost a sure thing on our roster
