Highly doubt they'll be looking for anything longer than 3yrs.
- DrChristianTroy

Yeah, as Fosco already said, they have suggested that one year deals would be preferable. Just someone else suggested a back diving 8 year deal. But with the new rules (about change in salary from year to year and lowest must be at least 50% of highest) front loaded contracts aren't much of a benefit anymore.

I love what Vancouver has done over the last week. I hope Edler is sent packing for a nice young return.

Who would still be in on edler?

Point is moot anyway, only 35+ can sign contract with performance bonus built in (and ELC). Sedin's won't qualify for that on their next contract.

Ahh, thanks for clarifying

On another note, I think someone on this board mentioned something about a 'side' personal services agreement type of arrangement (didn't Gretzky have one at some point?) which would essentially be a 'bonus' on top of the player's regular salary. Although I'm sure at this point that would probably fall within CBA contravention, does anyone have the official stance on this?

That was DCT. I have heard talk of this for players playing in different markets. Something like "Kovulchuk could make more in endorsements by being in NJ than in Atlanta..." I think that if a player was being paid by the team owner it would have to fall under the salary cap, but if it were the owners "buddy" with a car dealership or something...

EDIT - I can't imagine that Sidney Crosby's contract with Rebok has anything to do with his NHL salary.

Cap geek has $0 listed as signing bonus. Everything is listed as salary. It could be wrong, capgeek did have some issues today.

Well, there you go, I searched for the word "void", if I had used "terminate" I likely would have found it

Worst contract today?

Weiss?
Filpulla?
Gordon?
Bozak?

Best contract?

Not UFA but that Hamonic deal looks pretty nice

Yah, I figured as much. That would effectively give teams an unlimited salary cap. I'm curious, however, what sort of loophole(s) - if any- will be discovered in this new CBA. You have to figure that the Bettman and Co couldn't have thought of everything with respect to possible creative 'legal'' circumvention

Worst contract was given to Clarkson. One half decent season doesnt mean you should make that kinda of money with that term.

Clarkson hands down is the worst signing of the day.

I would say Filpulla is confusing to me, why buyout Vinny in the first place, they could have made it work.

Clarkson and Horton were the best of the lot and got paid like it. Clarkson's cap hit isn't bad, the term would scare the crap out of me if I were a leafs fan.

Harmonic yes, and I liked the Ryan trade to the Sens, nice upgrade for them I think.

Maybe MG felt that Lapiere was an AV guy and his "antics" were the wrong direction?

I disagree. Think he got to much for far to long but I expect 25 goals and nastiness. Bozak isn't even a top 6 forward. Weiss sucks. And Gordon? He wins face offs

I'm surprised that Alberta in Canada and Florida and Texas in the US aren't more highly sought after for NHL free agents, no state/provincial income tax. Also, Colorado and Arizona with quite low state taxes (under 5%). In California you pay 10+% on income over $1million!

I agree, the Clarkson deal is only bad because of the length of the contract (although yes, there is the usual over-payment - but in comparison to some of the other deals made today - Clowe, Roy etc, it's not that bad). I would have loved to see him in a Canuck's jersey.
