I doubt that happens. Either something totally unexpected will happen today, or nothing at all. I'm leaning toward nothing at all. Crappy FA market, and, until teams sift through the garbage that is out there, it will be a crappy trade market. This will be the most boring offseason ever. I'm not being negative. I actually think that that is a good thing. Miller and Vanek will command the biggest return at the deadline. This rebuild will take years.

A really crappy UFA market could BOAST the trade market as teams realize they have to trade in order to make their teams better.

It was an extension. It doesn't take effect until next year.

I know I saw that... that means Coburn or Meszaros and I think I would pass...

I'd rather have those roster spaces go to Pysyk, McNabb, Ruhwedel, or Risto over them.

true.... they do lose Meszaros and Timonen off their cap next year... but Schenn's 3.1M and Courterier's 1.3M are RFAs.

Looks like they are currently at 51M for next season already.

I could see this being the year Buffalo throws an offer sheet at a lower tier RFA. They do have 3 2nd round picks. And a lot of guys would fall into that salary range

can Buffalo trade Miller to St. Louis and take back Halak+obviously and buy him out straight away or is that against the rules?

I really do see the plan as....

Trade Miller before the season.

Try to make moves to get Vanek to resign.

If we can't get Vanek to resign.. then trade him at the deadline where he will be the #1 sought after player.

What do you mean? He's basically retired, but not officially so that he can go on LTIR every year, effectively burying his whole cap hit. He's doing some scouting for that team to earn his keep. If he retires, the Flyers have to eat his whole cap number because he signed to a 35+ contract. They are gaming the system right now, but nobody really cares.

why even buy him out...

If we made that trade.. Halak is making 3.7M I think and is on a 1 year deal..

I'd have Halak and Enroth be our 1A and 1B... Let Hackett season in the Rochester for a season and then go from there.

I thinnk Vanek still gets a 1st+roster player+prospect(top 6 top 4 defence) at the trade deadline....my ownly worry is injury.

Buyout period is over until after Stanley Cup finals next year & Halak is a UFA by then.
