Having an owner who believed that every player should have a 1-year contract did not help the situation either.
- buffalokb

Please. Stop excusing Darcy's ineptitude by placing blame on past ownership. Look at what this clown has done since new ownership and keep in mind this is and was his roster. Overpaying for FA's and perpetuating the legend of Buffalo sucks ... Those are his doings. Pegula lifted all restrictions, and now we are trending down faster than before because of very poor decision making. So the consensus is that he "wins" trade deals...but those are the very few he does make ... Where we as fans are in the dark is around the number of potential trades that weren't done because he over-values his players ... And now we witness the de-valuing of Miller before our eyes ... He has totally mid-managed this situation , so erase the Pommer trade win with the Miller trade loss. Even money so far

So lets talk Vanek.

Vanek-Backstom-Ovechkin line sounds nice, no?

- ImThatGuy

I've kicked the Vanek can around here already. It will require retention of salary, you guys absorbing a bad contract or two, or both.

For some reason..... I don't think we should rule out Colorado as a Miller trade partner yet...

I just don't htink so... they need D.. and we got PLENTY.

So instead, we absorb a cap hit we still can't fit, albeit smaller, and then also likely send out one of our younger, cheaper goaltenders out.

What a great plan for the Capitals moving forward.

- Blackstrom2

We don't want a goalie. Btw never said Miller to Wsh was a good idea. Simply stating money isn't a issue. You guys should be more interested in Vanek or Ennis.

The frequency of those moves happening has nothing to do with Miller having more value to a contending team than he will on the Sabres. It's also has nothing to do with Miller as an asset needing to be moved for something rather than being allowed to walk for nothing.
- BuffaJoe

That has eveything to do with it. If Miller had 3 more years on his deal, would there even be half of this debate. Teams know Miller can and will most likely walk for nothing next year and they have a chance to sing him without giving up anything to get him.

Varlamov is questionably a starter as well. Who is their other guy? Giggy still?

Is Holtby still not "f'n rock solid" compared to Miller? Are the Caps, a team which just saw their 2C walk because of cap space, still a team who needs Miller?
- Blackstrom2

Is anyone here really suggesting that the Caps would want Ryan Miller? Who the (frank) cares about the Caps? Not even on the radar. BTW, I live in DC and go to games, and while Holtby has been impressive, he's only played 57 nhl games. He's not proven, but he does have a lot of promise. The main discussion was whether Miller is an upgrade over Halak, which he is. How much are teams willing to spend on a goalie for one year? Keep in mind that the Sabres can retain half of Miller's cap hit and salary, so, how much is Miller worth on a one year, 3.125 million dollar contract? More than Halak + Russel, which amounts to absolutely nothing for a rebuilding team. Must be picks and/or prospects.

Which contending teams paid big for a goalie at last years trade deadline again? Pretty sure it was none. The year before? Same story. When is the last time there was a big deal for a goalie at the deadline?
- Antilles

The fact that it hasn't happened in the last two years does not mean that it 'would never' happen or 'doesn't make any sense.' That is not an argument at all.

Something like that could be worked out. Obviously needs some tinkering.

Kind of a high price to pay for an upgrade from Erat to Vanek though.

you are joking right?

Vanek is a PPG player and 2 time 40 goal scorer.. Erat ... not so much.
