We need to hear the terms first. The Oil might be eating part of his salary.

Even so, just moving the cap hit for two seasons is a win, even if you eat some cash.

Gotta give credit where credit is due -- thought that cap hit was unmovable in today's NHL.

What I'm saying is that don't expect MacT to do anything because he's of the same mindset as Cloutier, or so it seems. He claims to be ready to do dramatic things, but he won't. Why?, because drama involves moving players from the so called core. Getting prime UFA's to sign in Edmonton is a stretch, and he's not going to trade anyone important, so all you're left with is chasing 3rd liners and compiling draft choices. Get used to it.

He should have been able to get someone like Seguin today with all of the assets at his disposal. Why not trade a Yak, or RNH, and a secondary piece to get him? Bet MacT wasn't even involved in a phone call.

- Old Pappy

Cause that's a stupid idea. Trade our 1st line center that's compared to a young Datsyuk or our future 1st line winger compared to a young Kovalchuk that poured it on at the end of the year once he was given top 6 minutes. They are 19 and 20 still. They will both be amazing players in this league and are going nowhere. Would you trade Datsyuk or Kovalchuk at that age in an attempt to make the playoffs one year? Just ridiculous. Toronto fans make the playoffs one year and now they're experts on building a team.

Dreger and McKenzie are reporting several pieces involved. Could be pretty interesting.

I meant that the Oilers might take part of the cap hit. This was negotiated into the latest CBA.

Oh, I see -- gotcha. You're right, gotta see the terms first.

Still and all, I still give the Oilers, MacTavish at least some credit here -- just finding a way to make pieces fit had to be hella difficult.

Also likely another center coming in via FA or hemsky trade. Is the first domino of many changes to come? I think and hope so

I like what the Oilers did in trading down and getting more prospects. This is the same kinda move Detroit has made. I would rather have a team get more depth and put itself in position to be good for many years than just make a quick fix to try and make the playoffs now.
I think we are seeing some bold moves cutting lose those defence prospects. The culture is changing and the message is being sent to roster players and prospects alike. Still early!
This is not a great year for free agents and to overpay may not make sense for the talent available. I agree with having patience.
I am really looking forward to seeing how the AHL and Junior players develop this year.
Another year of experience and strength training should make a big difference for the untouchables as well.

Trading down does give us more depth. However it is more depth of players that won't even make it to the AHL. We got some decent gamble picks in there that could pan out but statistically most won't. Detroit does do this but they have what I think we can all agree is probably the best scouting in the league. We don't. They find Datsyuk and Zetterbergs in the late round. More often than not we find guys that never turn out. I do like 3 or 4 of the picks but they are gambles.

If Edmonton kept their first second round pick we could have a quality goalie in our system right now or a good forward like Petan who had 120 pts last year and was +68. Small but he is likely going to be like St. Louis in the NHL. There are many other good players that we missed out on moving that first second round pick. We all know I could go on listing them but take a look and tell me if you would really rather have the two russians than some of these guys.

Eklund with yet another miss. This guy doesn't break anything. Also, Clouts and his source with another miss. This site sucks except for the Oiler fan banter.

I completely agree. Yak has played 48 games and RNH roughly double that. Both players are going to be amazing. Seguin is decent but not better than our top 4 young forwards. I would have traded Sam + for him but even Sam hasn't come near to hitting his potential yet.

And how many of those later picks pan out?? Not many. Second, all we heard leading up to the draft is the Oilers having the 2nd round picks to either move back into the first or grab a goalie in the 2nd. Unfortunately MacT should have jumped in front of my Habs to grab Fucale because where he went was a steal.

But Jarry & Comrie were both available & by moving to a later 2nd & then even further down the draft ladder, they blew that chance as well.

I would have kept the 2nd & chose Jarry right after Fucale went.

Well he's also asking between 5 & 6 million per season, he isn't coming to Edmonton.

I said we could have taken a goalie prospect or a forward. That is not knocking dubey at all. The point was that we needed quality out of this years draft more than quantity.

Seguin will be awesome too. Only difference is Boston has a good team and can afford to make that trade. We can't. Horcoff for Seguin.

Edmonton might be stuck offering 5 mil for a second line winger on a short contract. We need someone to play top 6 minutes and we are going to likely overpay for him.

If it was RNH for Seguin straight I would be more okay with it. I just don't like the extras we would have to throw in as they both are going to be great players but very different styles. RNH IMO is going to become one of the best play makers in the game (when he hits his prime).
