I just glanced at the teams...where else would he go? Flyers may have some leverage here

He's not going to Edmonton or Calgary

Pittsburgh if they suddenly decide to cut bait with MAF?

Who else?

- Just5

I think Pittsburgh has already said they're sticking with MAF. Let's start by listing all of the teams that need a starter (Or will probably need one by the end of this summer)
Buffalo, Calgary, Edmonton, Florida, NY Islanders, Philadelphia, and Tampa Bay.

In all honesty, Buffalo will probably be getting a young goalie back in whatever deal happens for Miller, or else Miller won't be traded. Calgary is in a full on rebuild, so they aren't going for a 40 year old. Edmonton could potentially go after him. Florida has their goalie of the future in Markstrom, but I could still see them trying for him. Islanders will stick with Nabby. Philly might try for him (lol jk we're goin all in for him), and Tampa could potentially make a bid for him. That leaves us with Edmonton, Florida, Philly, and Tampa. I personally think Edmonton will go with Bryz, as he could probably delay their goaltending problem for a few more years than Thomas could. But let's not cross off Edmonton, let's just say that 1 team from this list of 3 teams that aren't us will solve their problem with Bryz and not Thomas. That leaves us making a bid for Thomas with the competition of some 2-team combination of Tampa, Edmonton, and Florida. Those are the teams he could go to. I say it in the least full-of-my-team way that Philly is the better free agent destination out of any of those teams for a guy that wants to win something. He won't make the playoffs with Edmonton, Tampa, or Florida unless he carries them on his back all the way there like Bob did this season for Columbus. With the recent signings of Streit and Vinny, we're sort of the premier free-agent destination, as, let's face it, our forward core looks flat out threatening next year. I'd say based on my speculations that we could easily get Thomas if we made any effort at all to sign him. But then again, they're just speculations and anything at all can happen.

That's the point ... nabby, thomas, emery ... Can compete and take the number 1 spot.
You don't give Mason the #1 spot after 8 freaking good games buddy. You need an alternative. You talking boosh and leighton wtf

IMO this isn't complicated. You give Mason the puck, it's his role to lose. You have to get a 'servicable' backup of decent quality. It would be dumb IMO to sign a #1 goalie. Why trade a future 3 for a goalie who will play one year on the bench and be gone. Think people, think.

The point is don't GIVE anything to anybody ... grab a guy that can be 1 or 2 .... let them compete ... the best guy for the job gets it ... takes pressure off the 2 goalies and they perform 100% ...... It's not black and white

I like that they're bringing Ryan McKay in for a look-see. There are a few of us here in the threads that thought he might be worth signing after his season with Miami (Ohio).
- tangent_man

Agreed!! Been saying they should sign McKay for a while now. I watch a lot of MU hockey each year (I'm an alum), and I think this kid has NHL starter potential. He's one of those goalies for whom the team just seems to play better. He started the year as a split starter, but basically won the job down the stretch and into the playoffs. Very happy to see him invited to camp. Hope they sign him.

I think that Friday they announce a deal with Thomas for 1 year at $3mm. Too many stars seem to be aligning for it not to happen

Hopefully you just at a bad burrito or something and this feeling will pass. I want no part of Thomas. Would prefer literally any other FA goalie over him.

tbh, I'm not sure how the rules work with college players and contracts vs. eligibility. Ideally he'd go back to Miami and play at least one more season there, but I'm not sure that's possible once he signs a contract. Personally I think he's good enough to play in the A, but there are certainly guys ahead of him there. I'm sure someone on here has a much better understanding of the possible options than I do.

Just My opinion... fire away guys!
i think Homer needs to trade Read now while his value is high. Theres absolutely no way the Flyers will be able to resign him next season unless the cap goes up 5+M. Even then idk if that gets it done. I think they should trade Read for Halak. If St Louis wants a prospect or pick not named Schenn, Couturier, Laughton, Gustaffson, Morin, Ghost or and 1st round pick, then give them it.

I would really, really, realy like to keep Couturier. Unfortunately, we have to face the facts... Vinny will be our best FO man for the next 5 years... it doesnt make much sense to move him to wing now does it? Couturier IMO can play 2nd line C RIGHT now. You cant tell me he wants to be a 3rd line center for the next 3+ years, can you? I mean Joe Pavelski has done it, i cant believe he's last that long, guys a top center on some teams.

What i would do: Trade Read for Halak. Resign Gagne for 2M. Thats all. Honestly. Go into the season with this as our roster:
Harts-G-Jake
Schenn-Vinny-Simms
Gagne-Couts-Akeson
Talbot-Laughton-Rinaldo
Rosehill

Kimmo-Schenn
Streit-Coburn
Mezzy-Grossmann
Gus

Halak
Mason

here's the capgeek of it. Gervais was sent down. If he gets claimed, whoop de (frank)ing do. We got depth.

Akeson has no two-way game why are you putting him on our defensive line? Especially when you have Talbot, and Mcginn to play the 4th line, as he's the better energy player.

Agreed. I simply look at Thomas as a bridge, however rickety, to Mason as our reliable #1 goalie for years to come. And if both of them play well, looking for something to prove, so much the better for the team. Ultimately, we need a cushion between Mason and the idiocy of Philadelphia for at least 1 year, then he should be able to hand the pressure and the media, hopefully in a way similar to the way Pronger did.

Seriously, that is what Pronger should teach every player in the NHL...how to handle morons in the media.

Pronger had such a special way of making a hotshot reporter who thought they had were smart with some clever thing to say look extremely small and insignificant. That's one of the things I miss most about Prongs.

Enough of the I can't wait to boo TT, he's a headcase, etc. We would be paying him to play hockey, to keep the puck out of the net, to help the Flyers win games, as long as he would do that then he can say whatever he wants.

I think Edmonton is happy with dubnyk. Had a .917, .914 and .921 sv% last 3 years, and his gaa has declined over the past three yrs as well.

Tampa just traded assets for Ben bishop, so I don't see them going after Thomas.

Florida would probably be interested in Thomas, but I don't see Thomas wanting to go there.

I dunno all the talk around the oilers seems to be that Dubnyk is expendable and Bryz is a good option in net. Tampa did just trade Conacher for Bishop, but Bishop didn't do so hot in Tampa last year, and I'm sure they'd be looking at Thomas as a similar 1A type guy to help boost Bishop's game. That's the big thing... I don't know what it is about Philly, but free agents seem to like the idea of coming here. Out of Tampa, Florida, Edmonton, and Philly, Philly would probably be his most desired destination.
