You're wrong.

You should read this before saying that no other team would've given Vincent Lecavalier what the Flyers did.

What I do know is by the time you're into your 30's, your ceiling has been met and your skills will not be getting better. By the time you're 35, those skills, either because of age or injury (potential or a culmination of those throughout the years), will slide even quicker. Therefore, as a GM, you're paying good money and taking up valuable space during those years for an asset that is quickly depreciating.

IMHO, never a good idea.

Chara is 36 and still a top 5 dman. Elias is 37 and still a 0.80 ppg player. Technology, medicine and nutrition maybe has changed the nature of being able to play for the mid 30's pro athlete. Streit and Vinnie should be fine barring injuries.

And the Vinnie deal was not a bargain but still a good deal for the Flyers. I would dare say it was below market value relatively speaking once these other FA's sign for what they will in the next few days.

It doesn't tell you anything because you don't want to admit you're flat-out wrong. It doesn't fit your narrative, and for whatever reason, you just can't man up and admit you're wrong.

"We could have had a much more significant contract if he made the decision solely on money," agent Kent Hughes said Wednesday in a phone interview. "But we didn't solicit offers from everyone. We kind of narrowed it down."

It's sad, and it says a lot about you, that you can read that and sit there and pretend like you didn't and that you don't understand what that means.

Perhaps, and that's a big perhaps.

Personally, for the years offered, it's a risk I wouldn't be willing to take.

Edit: And remember, Chara got smoked in the finals.

Giroux seems like the kind of competitor that will give it even more when paid like a top player. I have no problem with the Flyers not screwing around with this deal

I agree the Streit deal is risky only b/c its a 35+ contract. That contract worries me but Streit has played only a few more career games under his belt than Yandle who is 10 years younger. There shouldn't be much wear and tear on him.

While I agree the NHL is the toughest/demanding league to play in, it's not like streit spent years 18-27 of his life not playing hockey somewhere... It just wasn't in the NHL

It only says he could have made more money, says nothing about years. This is his agent talking so take it with a grain of salt..

@Real_ESPNLeBrun. Just ironing out a few wrinkles and it will be announced within a day or 2. Sources suggest closer to $8.3 per.

But you'd believe it if the agent said, "We're only here because the Flyers offered us the most money and the most years."

See, that's how that works -- everybody's a liar when what they say makes the Flyers look competent. But those same people are Honest John when it makes the Flyers look bad.

Trust me, I get it.

Of course his agent is going to do whatever he can to butter up the Philly fan base by telling the fans he could have gotten more elsewhere

I love Claude, but I just don't see him being on the same level as Crosby or Malkin. Just seems like too much and too long.

It's Vinny's agent's responsibility to place him in the best possible light. He's rightly praising the Flyers organization.

Tell me you've never heard an agent say the same exact thing time after time after their FA signed with whomever they signed with.

Or in the alternative, when was the last time you heard an agent say "we signed here simply because they offered the most money though this wasn't the team on the top of our list".?

Find me that quote and I'll man up and agree I'm wrong.

I'm pretty sure VL could have gotten more money and same or better term from some other teams...4.5 mm per year for him is a steal imo...especially wth the cap likely going up in future seasons it will be seem quite affordable for his production and intangibles imo.

That's what Ritch Winter said, when he told the Philly media that Bryzgalov had no other suitors and they were bidding against themselves.

At $8.3m, Claude Giroux's cap comparables are Ryan Getzlaf (8.25) and Eric Staal (8.25)
