well you know what, the way the Flyers and Penguins are spending money leads me to believe that the salary cap will be going up to levels never seen before in the coming years, and if that unfortunate scenario you just laid out with Brad Richards occurs, it should be too crippling for our cap in future seasons.
- jimbro83

I say everyone stops arguing with Jimbro as a sign of appreciation for being one of the few people to point out the Pens are doing almost identical things to the flyers spending wise.

Non Flyer fans/media jumped on them for signing a 33 year old to a 5 year contract and the same people applauded the Pens signing a 34 year old to a 4 year deal.

Because that's so easy to do, a teenage GM playing NHL 13 could do it?
- Flyskippy

no, i said the same thing when it went down- just because it was a knee jerk reaction by the owner doesn't mean it had to be by the GM . homer backed himself into a corner unnecessarily. can't believe they couldn't see this and i hope it's the last time they are caught up in such a myopic frenzy.

I think your underestimating the raises that Couturier and B Schenn might get. If they have productive year they could get really expensive really fast.
- 215mike

Schenn's cap hit is actually higher (3 times higher, I think) than his "real world" salary. Even if he breaks out, his cap hit probably will be comparable to what his cap hit is now, but his "real world" salary will go up.

I have no idea what you think Couturier should get. He's on an ELC and his numbers aren't conducive to a giant raise.

anybody else think the Flyers will move Talbot. I think him and his 1.75 cap hit will be gone. With the addition of Lecavalier the Flyers are now loaded down the middle with Giroux, Schenn, Couturier and last years 1st round pick Scott Laughton.
- 215mike

I think teams will ask for him but I seriously doubt Talbot is going anywhere. His friendly cap hit and our loss of Fedetenko will keep him here.

yes but Adam hall cant put up 60 points and win face offs. Vinny does.
- moylander

Um.. Never implied that. Just meant I like when our 4th center can win a late D zone draw.

Just the Pronger injury would have been fine..... Its the other dozen+ injuries over each of the last two seasons that killed us. 8 concussions in 2011-12 was only the beginning.... Hartnell, Briere, Grossmann, Mez, Coburn, Gus, Timonen, + last season. A healthy flyers team.... That's all I want this season.
- moylander

it will go a long way towards a good season, but they are counting on a lot of guys w/ hard miles on the odometer.

Isn't Ference a lot older and slower than Coburn?
- Feanor

48 4 9 13 9 0 0 0 1 0 35 66 6.06 89
33 1 4 5 -10 0 0 0 0 0 41 38 2.63 76

which would you rather have? pretty easy to me - we pay too much for our D - Ference will be a good second pair or third pair D-man. Put him with Gus and I think that's pretty solid.

That's beside the point. The blame for the Bryzaster falls at Snider's feet.
- Flyskippy

that's actually the entire point, but we're not going to agree here, which is fine.

Actually, I think the guys they just took the pressure off of with bringing in Lecavalier are the young guys. Specifically, Couturier and Brayden Schenn.

i don't understand you guys love affair with Talbot. He had a fluke year in his first year with the Flyers he won't crack 30points again. His numbers on average are around 20-23pts a season and his 1.75 cap hit plus with players in the system like a Laughton he could be replace more cheaply and more offensive upside.

One thing's for sure: The power play is looking pretty effing lethal right about now. The days of wondering if the second unit can/would score should be minimized -- that second unit could very well have Hartnell, Streit and Matt Read on it. That should be far more effective.

What it really boils down to is that, at this stage of their careers, Vincent Lecavalier is a better player than Danny Briere. Doesn't mean Briere won't be a good fit elsewhere; it means that the Flyers didn't have the roster construction that would allow him to be successful in Philadelphia.

I am curious to see Brayden Schenn's likely conversion to LW. Hope that goes smoothly.

All in all, though, this move, at this time, fits what the Flyers need. Same with Streit. They fill specific roles on this team for next year and the year after, and in the third year of those deals, the younger players should be ready to make up for the production they will lose.

There was a gap on the Flyers' roster between NHL production and learning how to produce in the NHL, then doing it. Right now, I think Paul Holmgren's done a good job in addressing those needs and come Friday, we'll get a goalie in here, too.

He is a good defensive player and great PK guy. Very gritty too. Offense is irrelevant for him.

This year Schenn is set to make 800k in salary. going from 800k to 3 mill in salary is a significant raise. Both will also be on their first contract out of a ELD. Dont see either getting much more than I have put down.

i think vinny brings a lot of what we were getting from danny and even jagr to some extent. they were rudderless at times last yr and he'll help in that regard as well.

As MB (?) said earlier, everything Homer has don to address the team HAS been the contingency plan for replacing Pronger. Trying to get Weber was one such attempt to shore up the hole left by Pronger's absence.

which exactly is Laughton. a good two player heck people compared him to Mike Richards probably not as good offensively. But defensively thats his game.

The near $21mm in cap space next year, combined with a probable rise in salary cap will likely allow them to keep Giroux, Coururier and Schenn, if not Read.

If you read the blog, all the questions you asked are answered. You also forget the near $5mm in LTIR relief from Pronger. Considering your team just gave 4 years to a 34 year old that's never been a top line player without Crosby and made Letang the 3rd highest cap hit in the NHL among defensemen, you might want to consider moving out of that glass house before tossing any stones.

- Jsaquella

seriously, for the 2014-2015 season, 35.45 tied up on 5 players (Crosby, Malkin, Neal, Letang and Fleury). How do you even work around that?

Laughton hasn't broken into the league yet, how can we bank on him carrying the load defensively? It's important to have a veteran like Talbot to do the yeoman's work.

Talbot can play wing and he's a tremendous PK guy. He's likely to pot 10+ goals. For his cap hit, he's tremendous value.
