So for those who are asking that we trade away Coburn as a salary dump, how did you convince yourself this was l good idea? Meszaros is possibly getting traded because of his injuries. Then we re hoping Grossman will be healthy enough to come to camp and play this season. However if we keep both Grossman and Meszaros and dump Coburn, then what? Sign a much older Rob Scuderi? So when Scuderi retired and Coburn wins a Cup elsewhere, will those same people blame Homer? Leave the D alone. Let the chips fall where they may. Wait for any other quick fixes during the regular season.

Trading Coburn is not a bad idea. Trading Coburn as a salary dump is.

I'm wondering though if Coburn would be pissed off come training camp after hearing all these trade rumours about him. I mean, it's a business, so there's that angle. Maybe he plays with a chip on his shoulder, and plays with that rarely seen nastiness he lacks.

I fully expect a bounce-back season for Coburn, regardless of where he plays.

Also, I don't think it is out of the question for another of the really young d-men outside of Gus to play his way into a top 6 role this season.

Here we are, my most ideal roster for next season:

CAPGEEK.COM USER GENERATED ROSTER

Scott Hartnell ($4.750m) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / Jakub Voracek ($4.250m)
Brayden Schenn ($3.110m) / Vincent Lecavalier ($4.500m) / Wayne Simmonds ($3.975m)
Simon Gagne ($2.000m) / Sean Couturier ($1.375m) / Maxime Talbot ($1.750m)

Nicklas Grossmann ($3.500m) / Erik Gustafsson ($0.851m)
Marc-Andre Bourdon ($0.613m) /

Tim Thomas ($3.500m)

Buyout: Oskars Bartulis ($0.100m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)

SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $62,862,594; BONUSES: $2,800,000
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $4,237,406

The moves I would like to see made, which are implemented in this roster are as follows:
-Gagne has been resign for $2,000,000. If he can't be had for that little, there is still a $4.2 million cushion which can be comfortably split into. He is a solid two-way player who will fit very nicely onto our French connection 3rd line.

-Read, Coburn, and whatever non-roster pieces necessary have been traded to Vancouver in exchange for Alex Edler. He is the defenseman we need, and is a definite upgrade over Coburn. My concern with this move is Edler is apparently no longer on the market. This concerns me.

-Tim Thomas has been signed to a 1 year, $3.5 million dollar contract. Again, if the salary has to go up a little bit from this mark, there is space for that. Hopefully he can pull a Dominic Hasek and put up solid numbers in his first year back. I suspect that if this is the case, that he will be leaving to free agency next off season, which is good. Maybe by then Mason will have grown sufficiently to claim the starter role.

Looking ahead to next off season. With Timonen coming off of the books, and the cap going up to at least $70 million, we shouldn't have tremendous problem with our cap. I expect the roster to look something like:

For the sake of not knowing where things will be in 1 year, I've resign Giroux for $7.5 million, seeing as his extension is rumored to be just over $7 million. I've resigned both Couturier for $3.5 million, as well as Brayden Schenn. Just for the sake of showing off our remaining cap space, I've resigned Tim Thomas to his former $5 million salary. With Kimmo leaving, Streit would be quarterbacking the 1st PP unit, and Gus would be quarterbacking the 2nd. Lauridsen and Grossmann would form a safe, shutdown 3rd pairing.

Was optimistically looking at it with a kind eye until the Thomas resign for 5M when he is 40. Even if he wins us the cup I wouldn't pay him 5M the next year (well thats a bit over board but you get the point).

Anyways, I wonder if Streit would have received such a lucrative deal if Gilbert and Ballard had also been on the market....? Not that they are in the same category but more options= higher supply per the demand.

If trades do go down with our D, those two should be considered. Gilbert in particular.

Im hesitant on how fresh this report is, whether its pre or post NTC kicking in for Edler, I think its recent because on various other boards theyre still talking about it. PHI, TB, DET and someone else interested.

It wouldnt surprise me even if they waived Ballard if theyre getting a Dman in return anyways.

Yeah we will see, Philly has more prospects to offer IMO just depends what they would want for him. Vancouver has about 7mil in cap space but they only have 16 players signed so probably need to shed more salary.

Yea Edler is everything theyre looking for imo, worth inquiring about atleast. His cap hit is great for being a true #1.

It would require one of the kids. Not sure how I feel about that.

I really like the fact the Flyers drafted D and are picking up assets via FA rather than trading picks to get them. Keep your picks unless you obtain a long term asset. The current strategy so far this off season works for me.

Its great, they can really do whatever they want at this point. Go big or do nothing, Im fine either way. I want Thomas for a year and Im sure they have to do a deal with Mezzy for cap purposes, but Im good with this team for next season.

Ha no sorry I didn't mean to intend that we would actually be resigning Thomas, let alone at $5 mil. Because I just have no idea what our goaltending situation will be next off season, I meant to do it more just to show off how much cap space we have that we can resign Giroux, BSchenn, Coots, and Mason in the salary area they will probably be resigned, and still have enough cap to not only sign a goalie for $5 mil, but still have a comfortable cap cushion left over.
