And if it backfires you are now in a cap nightmare and out 4 #1's

We can't afford Mac at $6 but the Isles can and he is certainly worth the 1 2 3 round comp they'd have to give up. This is what worries me.

Really makes you think...but we've seen hank singlehandedly steal wins in the regular season and steal a series or 2 in the playoffs.
- rangerdanger94

Just remember he'll be 31 this year, if he doesn't win a cup in 3 or 4 years max, he won't win one.

thats if you offer sheet over $8M! But if for example the Habs offer sheeted Mcdonaugh $7.5M/year and the compensation is 2 1sts, 2nd, 3rd, dont you think the Rangers would match?

Hasek won a cup late in his career. Never put a limit on the great ones.

P. K. Subban makes 2.8 with a Norris trophy on his resume, and is a RFA next year. They're not giving McDonagh his money.

He won't sign with the Islanders and Sather is not going to lowball McDonagh. The defensemen situation is tenuous at best, with Staal uncertain to regain form and Del Zotto having a regression from the previous season, they can't take a risk with McDonagh.

Subban had a breakout year this season, before that he was known as liability more than an asset.

He will command a ton going forward. Base McDonagh's potential salary on what Shattenkirk got. Both are similar, as far as their career progression is concerned, and I believe he got a four year deal worth four million a season.

We talk about cap responsibility going forward, anything over 5 years for Hank will be yet another contract will be choking on.

Subban was never a liability more than an asset...
He was always an excellent player but he plays a risky game and the Montreal media is retarded...
That being said, he 100% shouldnt of won the norris THIS year.

Are you ready to make McDonagh the highest paid Rangers dman? Then give him 4mil a year. Question is, is Slats?

We can go 10% over the cap. It won't be at stepans expense. Someone would get moved during the summer.

Ralph Kiner tells a story, he was coming off another 50 home run season, and was trying to negotiate a new contract. The team had finished in last place, and when asked the owner for a raise, he told him "I finished in last place with you, I can finish in last place without you". No one is irreplaceable.

Subban was often benched and as you said was too risky a player. He calmed that down and still put up solid offensive numbers. He is extremely talented and has turned into one of the best in the game. Prior to this year though he was an inconsistent player, without a doubt.

Same goes for any low scoring team without an elite starting goalie. How would LA fare without Quick, Bruins without Rask etc?

Not even the mighty Hawks would have won without Crawford playing outstandingly in the playoffs.

I'm sure this was brought up already but if the Rangers had bought out Richards and signed Lecavalier, they would not have been able to buy Lecavalier out next summer if he stunk because the Rangers would have already used both compliance buyouts on Redden and Richards. They could have used the regular buyout where a portion of the cap hit remains on the club's salary cap but that's far from ideal.

Maybe but anything less could be viewed by the Lundqvist camp as insulting. If we lost Hank, perhaps to a division rival simply because Slats refused to go seven years you will see a mutiny on this board and all over Ranger land the likes we have never seen before. I'm not sure the Rangers will want to risk that PR nightmare.
