riberio will get more than $5 mil per and clarkson will too. i'm sorry but those are worse deals than what richards has this season.
- rangerdanger94

Riberio is far more worth that kinda of money than Clarkson is. Clarkson shouldnt get anything more than 3.5.

The summer hasn't even started yet, I think some posturing will be done before camp opens.
- MidnightMarauder

Yeah I guess, but for as good as some of the trades Sather makes are, I don't get some of the cap management.

clarkson shouldn't, but he probably will. so what i'm saying is that if we buyout richards, do you wanna pay a guy like clarkson $4-5mil for 8 years or would you rather just keep richards? or would you rather sather buyout richards, test the market, realize that nobody is worth anything, and then not do anything so we're without richards and didn't add anyone through FA?

Actually the Rangers cap management hasn't been all that bad. Richards is the only questionable contract on the roster. Most teams have several atrocious deals.

I will say this...

Falk for Ferriero... good trade for us.
Kristo for Thomas... good trade for us

Might be small scale, but it looks like were getting decent guys out of it.

he only played 9 AHL games?
- rangerdanger94

You have a point there... I totally neglected the fact that when he was drafted he was just going into college and he spent all 4 years there... meaning hes only been a pro for 1 year.

Im liking this deal.

Forget dumping Richards to sign Vinny but we could have kept Clowe and brought someone else in for the bottom 6, I just don't get why the passed it up

I do believe Sather is letting other teams spend money in order to use the buy out nex offseason and sign someone from a better free agent pool or sign Hank which is of the utmost importance

For me. Its already said theres another year of Richards. Id keep Richards before targeting Riberio or giving Clarkson to much money just to be a 2nd or 3rd liner. Maybe Richards was just disinterested under Tortz this time around. Maybe Tortz was to easy on him since he got him a cup once. Make or break year for Richards is coming.

Agreed and I am not ruling out a significant trade of some sort, before camp opens.

i don't think you can even consider him being a pro for 1 year yet. after his school got eliminated from the NCAA tourney, he turned pro and joined montreal's AHL who was already eliminated from playoff contention and was more or less a complete mess for 9 games and then entered the offseason.

i'm with you brother...liking this deal so far for sure

Not buying out Richards is still & will always be a disaster, can't be said enough.

You just answered your own doubts. There isn't a lot out there this summer and the Rangers are not in a bad situation because they kept Richards. Let Lecavalier get waived after his second season in Philadelphia. Clowe wants a lot of money, I am not sure the Rangers would be wise to pay this guy what he is asking for.

Im not either...

Cranny might be right about Sather, he might be letting teams spend themselves out of FA next year. Phili signs VL4 and a goalie... even with the cap going up significantly next year, the Flyers need to resign Giroux, Couturier and Schenn. Theyre (frank)ed.

Explain...

He is a durable athlete, will likely get bought out next year anyway. Would rather see this guy rebound instead of going out and wasting a lot of money on another overrated hockey player.

Cmon Brandon, no defending this sh!t, guy is done & DONE! I hope for the Rangers sake he rebounds obviously, but I don't see it & if he gets hurt & can't be bought out next summer?

You don't think the shortened season and the fact he didn't prepare for a season didn't have a negative affect on his season?

I am not defending it, I just feel there was nothing significant via free agency that was worth opening up cap space for.

I would rather see Richards here, with a new system and a lot of motivation, than just another mercenary.

EDIT: He has been a notably durable player throughout his career. I don't think the injury theory is a valid one. Of course he can get hurt but why count on it, when he has never been an injury prone player throughout his career?

The trades are fine, I'm more referring to giving Pyatt Asham and Boyle one year too much which straps rookies finding a spot.

I DIDN'T SAY anything about bringing in another mercenary but some wiggle room to tinker would have been nice, plus the RFAs of our own that need to be taken care of.
