Neither did the hawks to start this season need I remind you

Halak and Thomas are the two names being tossed around

- moylander

Actually...we had 2...including Crow who had won 63 games the two seasons prior to this...you guys just paid $23 million to rid yourselves of a wing nut sieve. And Holmgren didn't write the check....Snider had to.

But you need to shed at least 6/8 million in cap space to do that and have flexibility. Which means one or two players go. It's essentially trading 2 players or three. If you sign Thomas.....your three big signings are, 33,35, and 39 year of age....when has something like that ever gone well.....also about Thomas....he just took a year off!! At the age of 39!!.... What a mess.......Holmgren just created more issues for himself...why?

That's a lot of paper....when does Holmgren get fired? They still need a phuckin goalie!

- UnnamedSource

I heard that LeCavalier played goalie in Pee-Wee. Holmgren is probably thinking that since every time he signs a goalie it is a disappointment then logically it must mean if you sign a non-goalie to play goalie it works out.

Man....they're a couple million over the cap...which means someone has to go.....with very little depth, shaky defense, and no goalie....and is there a reason why people think Buffalo would trade within the conference and give them Miller?? I could see Halak going to the Flyers but what does Philly have that St Louis wants???

What a mess!!

Laviolette....fired by Thanksgiving.....next coach of the ??????

He's a good coach too.......he has no chance.

St. Louis wants a center......especially after McDonald retiring.

Vinny signs with Philly......guess he does not want to win a Stanley Cup

Hawks have their core, not gonna sign a big name, unless it is very cheap

Still not as delicious as Esplen declaring Schneider was worth an all-star caliber player, 1st rounder, and prospect, then waxing as if it's all champagne and roses the very next day when all they got was the pick.

There is a different kind of thinking up there...

Gillis thinks the market changed still won't come close to admitting he was wrong at every turn.

I have to think Thomas could now look like Brett Hull and Keith Tkatchuk when they returned after the 2004 missed season....

A little geography lesson: Madison Avenue is in NY; Madison Street is in Chicago.

In Chicago (in general), N-S main streets are "Avenues"; E-W main streets are "Streets".

Unless, of course, you think Vigneault is going to do a terrific job next year....

Thomas would be an intriguing addition for Philly, but how will the year off affect his fitness, timing and confidence ? They will be a lot of pressure on any goalie in Philly.

The fax machine that's located next to the dot matrix printer that prints documents from an IBM PC Junior broke so Leddy and Kruger are UFAs.

No that's in the president's office, he gets all the newer technology. The carbon paper blew out of the UC office window before Q offers were due today so even though Stanley wrote 'em up, he wasn't able to send a copy to Leddy and Krugman.

When I went to Montreal last December, I went to a restaurant near the Centre Bell. It was called Madison's. I was thinking this should be great it is a Chicago Steakhouse...Turns out it was in reference to Madison Ave. The food was decent but the ribs were no where near as good as Carsons.

Im gonna chime in..... Not even close on the sell off - they will have no problems signing giroux, coots, schenn next year. Lose mez and they are cap compliant this season. What I think happens next is they trade a combo or maybe all of coots, coburn, read, pick for a #1 dman. Just a hunch.

Vinny adds size, 60 points , and most importantly face off wins for slightly more than what you guys just paid bickell.... A guy who scored 37 points at his best.... 3 seasons ago.

I like the signing. Go Philly !

And Simmonds is not going anywhere

Fair point. How do we feel about Bicks at $4m versus Vinny at $4.8

With the cap going down so dramatically, there will be more butts than seats this summer. If I'm Rozy or Zeus, or 50 other players of their caliber/age in this league, I'm getting my name on the dotted line ASAP...before the music stops. Every team will be forced to think youth ($750k type cap hit) to fill out the last few roster spots. Vets will be left without spots.

I agree, I have no faith Thomas can return after a year off at age 39 or 40 and just suddenly be very good again. A year off at any age if hard to come back from, but around 40 after sitting on the couch and watching TV for a year?

Vinny = $4.5 AAV

Bill Meltzer ‏@billmeltzer 2h
Regarding re-signing own players, Flyers will have nearly $11M of cap hits coming off books next summer plus cap ceiling likely to increase.

^^ More than enough to get Giroux, Schenn, Coots resigned which should cost about $5-6 million more than their salaries this season in total.

Trade Mez for a prospect/pick gives the flyers $3.7 million for a goalie this season (Halak/Thomas)

Hartnell-Girouz-Voracek
Schenn-Lecavalier-Simmonds
Talbot-Couturier-Read
McGinn-Laughton-Rinaldo

Timonen-Schenn
Streit-Coburn
Gus-Grossmann

Thomas
Mason

That's a playoff team. It was a good pick up imo and if the hawks or any team got vinny for $4.5 million on an under 35 contract they'd be ecstatic. +1 for Homer this time. Its nice to see Philly is still a destination for FAs after a down season.

Thought this was funny:

If I'm Couturier, I'm in a Dunkin Donuts bathroom dying my hair red, changing my name to Scott Hartnell & laying low til end o' free agency.

There were a few articles along those lines during the lockout that the end result of these new, belt-tightening CBA's is the end of the line vets get pushed out the door. They even had a long list of guys who never returned after the last lockout. I don't recall where that article was, it was 6 months ago, but you're dead on, the older guys don't have room to be too picky, teams are going to run out of cap room quickly.

Its too bad Philly already used their compliance buyouts. Was hoping they would have one and use it on Vinnie next year. That would be cool to read on the back of Vinnies hockey card. Is the only player in NHL history to have been CBOed twice...but...drat...
