Can they still find a home for him though? Does he have to be drafted in the import draft to be ignoble for the OHL, or can the leafs find a team on their own willin to take him? - burn
Whoops, I messed up, the draft is still going on. They're on pick 31. Could still be drafted. |

They didn't waste a buyout on Komi. They used what was available to them to remove what was needed.
This saving buyouts for later is utterly ridiculous. - burn
to rid themselves of a contract with one remaining year?
there are two contracts on the team with 4 remaining years, both higher in cap.. that may or may not be heading the same road as komisarek.
a lot hinges on their performances this season, and if both tank hard, the team will need to rid themselves of those contracts without it counting against the cap. there's a reason compliance buyouts can be used next summer as well.
best case scenario is liles buyout costs the team almost the same as komisareks, for 6 years.
far from ridiculous, it's wise cap management. |

Every team can have two imports on their team. Teams can ask for a pass in the import draft if they already have two imports on their team. |

Saving for something that might happen in the future, whe forgoing the present is pretty absurd.
They have 2. They used one and you have issue with 2 more guys. Good chance at least one of them bounces back and is able to play on the leafs going forward or at least makes himself tradable.
Saving it makes no sense. Make use of it to rid yourself of the issue at hand and fix any future issues in the future. |

if they make use of that 2.6 mil, and it's shown as desperate that they needed that space now, and just couldn't run the franchise without it, i'll agree with you..
saving it may make no sense right now, but the fact of the matter is.. in the unlikely event that both liles and grabovski need to be bought out, one of those buyouts will count against the cap for the next 6 years, at the exact same moment that mike komisarek would have been walking out of the books.
it's unlikely.. i'll give you that. but in the event it happens, the first thing that will come up is why the team was stupid enough to waste a freebie buyout out on mike komisarek when he was less than a year from walking away for nothing, and how a poor decision resulted in 6 years of cap hit. |
