Acquiring Bolland just limited our ability to sign both a player like Lecavalier and Clarkson, which is what we needed, an upgrade at 1st line center, and an upgrade at 2nd line RW. Instead we filled Macs spot with another 3rd liner. - ThePresident
You cant pass on a deal to upgrade like Nonis did with Bolland...because you might be able to land the 2 most sought after FA. the odds of one of them is low, both all but nothing.
IF...and thats if both decided to sign here..you can read between the lines on what Nonis said...they will use both buyouts this year or make a trade to make it work.

I wonder if the Leafs used St. Louis/Kessel talent/size/speed comparisons to try to entice Lecavalier to T.O.
"Hey Vinny, you've already got a cup, how would you like to be a 1c again with a sniping playmaker on your right wing again. We'd be willing to give you Grabovski's contract....just say the word and he's gone." |

Yes, I'm assuming, as of right now, if we lose Bozak, our 1st line center situation is worse then before. - ThePresident
so your saying dont make a perfectly acceptable deal because you think 2 of the top free agents are going sign here... because all those other top free agents that people said the leafs had room for have signed here... thats like saying im not going to invest in this decent property because im saving my money for lottery tickets... |

Why not just a straight buyout on Komi.? 66% of 4.5 M over 2 years right?
1. 5 M hit the next 2 years. So saves you 3M. Then if you need to.. buyout Liles and Grabo.
Saves you almost 11M this year.
Only buying out Grabo if we land another C. |

I don't disagree with your idea that eating up cap space for a third liner gives you less flexibility to make other deals, that's common sense. I do take issue with the fact that you seem to be equating it specifically to our ability to get Lecavalier and/or Clarkson.
Essentially if we don't sign one or both of them I don't want to hear you say that the Bolland trade cost us Lecavalier and/or Clarkson because there's no way you can know that for sure. There could be dozens of reasons they don't want to play for us and while dollar amount offered is one if Nonis REALLY needed to make some cap space he would be able to.
Hell, he's already been quoted as saying they have some things in the works that would free up cap space not including using the buyouts and he can still use both of them and make whatever trades or demoting guys as necessary to free up cap space.
We do have to re-sign our RFAs but they aren't exactly all going to be making $5mil a season, most of them will probably be more like $2.5mil if that. |

I personally hope Grabo ends up on the wing. I think it suits his skill-set much better. If he could just wheel up and down the boards with less defensive responsibility I think he could thrive. |

I would CERTAINLY go back...and my favorite part was the time spent on the coast in the little villages. Took scooter rides to the different parts, had different foods and wines from place to place. The food is as beautiful as the sights. Everything was fresh. Everything. |

Yeah I agree, I don't see the point of using a compliance buyout on Komi as he only has one more year left. Buy him out as normal or just leave him in the Marlies which, as far as I remember, doesn't count against the cap unless that changed in the new CBA.
Like you said, that frees up a huge pile of cap space and the only actual roster player we lose is Grabs and if we're replacing him with a better free agent then who cares? |

Just adding to your comment! Went to Rome as part of our honeymoon last year. I haven't looked at food back home the same ever since. I now know why north americans are so fat and why the europeans are so skinny! Fresh food to die for!
