I haven't read through the other comments, but I just wanted to throw out my thoughts on a question asked.

It's not the X's and O's that make the switch to winger difficult for centers. It's the fact that they are used to being in constant movement on the ice, whereas, a winger is sometimes at a standstill in the defensive zone and on the breakout. The centers also become accustom to receiving passes with speed and continuing their momentum from one end of the ice to the other. Again, the wingers are doing a lot more stopping and starting.

A guy like Malkin is not the fleetest of foot, but when he has momentum he carries it like a horse. Hence, the reason it's difficult for a player like him to make the adjustment. IMO LOL

What's sad is that Despress is the most NHL ready Dman the Pens have as a prospect. That means everyone else is just that much farther away from making an impact.

Pens are missing an entire line of forwards going into the season, and only Martin as the only Dman on contract after next season.

What if the Pens true intent is to bring him in to play with Despres and not Letang, they just don't want to tip their hand to Letang, so they float it out there that they are intrigued with Scuderi playing with Letang? Letang signs, Pens sign Scuderi, Letang thinks everything is hunky-dory, then BAM he is traded for a forward and some picks/prospects. Top 4 looks decent with Martin-Orpik and Scuderi-Despres, and we get a forward and save some cap space hopefully.

Or Despres is one of the best #5 guys in the entire league, which is what Letang was when the Penguins won in 2009.
