I think Schenn for Myers is close, but not quite enough.
I think Couturier for Myers is very fair on both ends.
The contract value of each is why there would have to be more to that deal.

Flyers aren't trading their young forwards. Bank it. 25 and under top 3 guys are here to stay, at least for now.

Myers is 23, and 23 for a dman is like 21 for a forward just cause of how much longer defesemen take to develop, so I'm not that opposed to this.

Homer said he wanted size up front and we desperately needed help winning faceoffs, the Flyers got both today. The Flyers always needed a splash. Always. Homer brought back star power back to philly as I had hoped. I would have been worried if they didn't. These wouldn't be the Flyers I grew up with had they not.

The defense is what it is. Meszaros is likely to be divided and that's it. Not the best defense but good enough to start the season. From here on out I hope they re-sign Gagne, sign a back up goaltender, keep Read and keep Laughton in the minors.

Yes I'm sorry my lines and pairs would exactly like this. Luke Schenn looked good with and without Timonen last season. There I said it!!!

Do you have an idea of what defenseman a Coburn, Mezaros, Read package could get us? Honest question.

No idea. What I do know is, Homer cannot fix this defense right now. I don't think anyone can. Trade one pricy defenseman and go with what you got. I expected to add a top scoring forward and we did. It's the only thing that made sense and still made sense to me. Why complicate things?

Edit. Like every other Flyers fan who allows his mind to run wild, I also wanted Bobby Ryan but this is better.

It's the Pittsburgh Extreme Delusion Syndrome.
For example, Vinny is injury prone, Crosby however is an Iron Man.

I'd rather see McGinn in then Rosehill. By a big margin. Hopefully a Read/Coburn/Mez/picks package can get us something of value. Talbot would be a very good 3rd line RW, and Laughton/Z1/McGinn would make an awesome energy line.

I am so excited about the Vinny signing I was yelling out my car window home from work. Anyways, above is what it would look like if we traded Mez for little to nothing. Signed Thomas (although I would be happy with any of the options placed on the table- I like the idea of a 1 year goalie playing with Mason to give him a chance to regain himself). And Gags back at 2M. Sorry Gags, if you want more we have some young guys that bring similar traits (McGinn, etc.) and can develop.

This is before LTIR for Pronger. My big question is, can we LTIR part of Pronger's salary or do you need to do the whole thing? Also, could someone explain the details of why LTIR is not a free lunch? I understand we need to bring guys up so we need flexibility in case of injury but how do bonuses work with this for next year?

You just can't wait to get those guys out of town can you?

Who will fill in the top 4 space? The D man you get and hope is as solid as Coburn? Who will replace Read? I don't even have a witty comment after that. Mez is done unfortunately, he was a good soldier and will be missed.

On second thought I completely agree. The flyers are stuck with him until he can prove himself healthy at the start of the year.

I'm a little late to the conversation, but caught many comments about how now this means we are trading Couturier or Schenn. Not seeing the connection here, can someone explain the thinking? Schenn clearly seems destined to be a winger anyway, and 14 can slide right into that 3rd line center spot. And it can't be a money issue because they don't make alot, and even with their contracts up next year as Bill has discussed in his blogs many times the cap hit shouldn't be all that much more for their next contracts. And finally, they'd have a tough time dealing either of these guys for a player like Yandle with another large cap hit. So why again does this signing mean one of them is leaving?

Sign Thomas, trade Mez, we should have the room. I don't fully understand the cap, but I believe we have to be cap compliant on day 1, and then Pronger's cap comes off the cap on day 1. I don't know if there is a small portion of a day where we are illegally over the cap. I'd like to know if this is true, and if so, what would be the punishment?

I would hope that trading Read AND Coburn AND Mezaors would bring back a dman who's better than Coburn. Gags would replace Read on the 3rd line, if that's what you mean, and he's a bit better suited to the 3rd line as well. Can Vinny play the PK?

It doesn't. Heading down the road and into next year with Timonen retiring the team needs to look at acquiring a top D man. But they have time to access their needs and not rush. I agree with you, the future is bright with good young talent.

I don't think the Yandle thing is happening. The price would just be way too high, as the Yotes seem content on being unreasonable with their price. Which they should be, they have no real reason to trade him.

Gags can't even hold Read's jock strap anymore. Read was a better player on the international stage than Simmonds. Played more minutes, more key situations, and had more points. Guy is a stud, please STOP throwing him into ever deal like he is a sweetener.

Yes, Vinny can play PK and PP if needed.

Exactly. Well some of us I guess are on the same page. On a somewhat related topic, I also would be very hesitant to deal Coburn. I could be in the minority on this one, but alot of Flyer fans seem to care-less about him being moved, but this guys been a pretty solid player here and he's still fairly young. He was terrible last year but the whole team was terrible. As you said with Kimmo likely retiring next season, I'd really like to keep Coburn and see if he rebounds. I'd try to deal Grossman if possible. I really worry about his concussion issues. And obviously Mez is a candidate as well which has been talked about alot. I think after the dust settles and some team gets left out in free agency, someone will roll the dice on Mez for 1 year.

It's not that Read is bad, it's that he's hitting free agency and there aren't many apparent ways to sign him while also resigning G, coots, and bschenn. As long as we move him this summer, it makes him a very valuable trade asset. Neither he nor Simmer is fit for the 3rd line. It just doesn't make sense. Gags does make sense on our 3rd line, as he is a solid two-way player who can play the PK, and he's at home and very comfortable here, meaning we can sign him for a very cheap price. He wouldn't be a sweetener in any deal we make, don't get me wrong. He would be the biggest piece of any trade made. But Coburn also holds good trade value along with Read. Both guys put together in a package could bring back a great asset, hopefully the Dman we need. All I'm saying is, if we can get a great, familiar player for cheap, that fits on our 3rd line; and just added a guy that can take his place in the PK, as well as adding to our PP, then why not take advantage of his trade value before he skips town or costs us a cap hit we can't really afford next season. His hit this season is one of the things that adds alot to his value, and that won't be the case next year.

I'm one of the few people not concerned with Grossmann's concussions. Guy is a rock, and he's a solid shutdown guy who will be a key part of a pair with an offensive guy like Gus or Streit.
