Rick Depietro is about as useless as a red light in grand theft auto

I used to LOVE that game.

There are entire days out of my life I spent playing Vice City and, to a lesser extent, San Andreas.

Worst case scenario, you have a guy who stinks, is a constant distraction, and is probably carrying a high cap hit and NMC.... doesn't that sound familiar.

Flyers logic.

To each their own, but Thomas would be an upgrade over Mason imo.

2011 Thomas would be. 2014 Thomas, 3 years older and a year removed from playing hockey, might not be.

That year off may have also allowed him to heal up any nagging injuries and to better prepare for the NHL.

I think he also realized that there would be a lockout, and chose a great time to take a year off.

The year off thing doesn't bother me at all. I'd much rather talk about him taking a year off then the injuries he incurred last year.

In the context of how the Bruins played, sure.

Let someone else take that chance that Thomas can still play and play in front of a team not nearly as disciplined, defensively, as the Bruins.

I think Rick DiPietro would be the only guy who isn't an upgrade.

Too bad they can't re-sign Bryzgalov.

if mason doesn't emerge as a viable starter, thomas will buy us time and give us the best fallback. halak has injury issues and would cost us assets. emery would be ok, but only as a 40 game kind of split start guy.

Or was the defense so good because he kept the puck out of the net?

Only interested in Thomas if its 1-2 year deal max.

Thomas would be a bridge guy.

Halak is still relatively young, and if available, I don't think would be expensive in terms of assets. He's a gamble with his injury history, but there could be a big payoff as well. He's been a great a postseason goaltender.

I have no problem w/Thomas, Halak, or Emery and I actually prefer them in that order. My concerns are w/the hack TMZ reporters that follow the team and how they will focus and fan the flames of Thomas's past comments.

Hope Homer says no to Clowe, Stalberg, and Iglina. I'd like Vinny on a cap friendly deal but I probably have a better chance of getting signed as a power forward myself.

I think that Emery and Mason would be the 1A/1B type thing. Same with Thomas. I think Emery would be cheaper, and is younger, so I'd prefer him at the moment. If he can't be brought in, I'd definitely inquire about Thomas.

Well, Homer did say he wants to get bigger. If you are over 6'2 on skates, I say you ask for an invite to camp.

are we talking about the same steve mason that has had 3 disastrous pretty much sub-900 save% (and over 3.0 GAA) seasons in a row? 2014 thomas is still an upgrade until mason can prove otherwise. I like mason, a lot, but 6 strong games in Philly does not make him an excellent starter to move forward with.

I'm sure the Flyers would love to win 2011's Stanley Cup.

The sad part is, as mentioned in the Daily News this AM, they may not have much of a choice.

Unless they pull the trigger on a trade, the Flyers are going to probably end up with a veteran free agent goaltender who people probably won't like, whether it's Thomas, Theodore, or Dan Ellis. And the Flyers have always like Thomas' competitiveness.

But I wonder how Thomas would expect to be compensated and what impact would he have on Mason. Would Thomas be OK with sitting on the bench if Mason gets on a roll?

I guess I see less risk in seeing Mason bounce back at 24 than I do in seeing Thomas trying to recapture his form at 40.

I agree. I liked Mason last year only because it got rid of 5-hole McGee. I'm not sold on Mason yet, but he's shown that he CAN be an elite goalie, and given that he's basically signed a tryout, I think we'll get his very best. He's has the added benefit of playing against teams who, for the most part, have not played against him much.

Again, given the options, I'll take Emery as my first choice, or go try to grab a Svedberg-type guy, or try to make a big deal for one of Gibson/Campbell.

The Flyers may not get a crack at Ray Emery because he appears to be close to re-signing with Chicago. His agent, J.P. Barry, met with the Blackhawks on Sunday night after the draft and the two sides are fairly confident that something can be worked out to keep Emery in the fold. Emery saw his fair share of starts behind starter Corey Crawford this past season and captured the Stanley Cup as a backup.

the guys i talk to here in chicago said the hawks want him back... and emery said publicly he wants to stay in chicago. I have little doubt he's signed before july 5th.

Ouch more than I expected, but not out of the question for me.

I'd sign him to that.
