He would probably be a star here.

Perhaps, but I am of the opinion that peanut brittle is more durable than him.

Now this is a reasonable middle ground. It's almost laughable to listen to all the Mike Richards comparisons. It isn't a lock for anyone to make the team out of camp but in the case of Laughton, if he does, of is a lock that he will see more responsibility. He never saw PK time at the NHL level l last season. He will if he makes the team this season and we will see how he looks.
- dingo8urbaby

Again, he's not Mike Richards. But, like Mike Richards, he's start this year as the 4th line center. So, should Mike Richards have been sent back to juniors for 2005/2006? Because we "wasted" an ELC year putting him on the 4th line.

Mike Richards was a different player than Laughton is.

Laughton hasn't scored nearly at the rate that Richards did in Junior hockey.

- johndewar

Their final seasons in Junior are very similar.

Richards: 58 points in 43 regular season games, 28 points in 15 playoff games

Laughton: 56 points in 49 regular season games, 13 points in 7 playoff games

what if vinny wants 5 years?

its too long for me

he is big but not physical, and reportedly he is slowing down

I don't want them to pick him out and then be forced to move one of the young centers.

- Marc D

Im saying if he has 2 or 3 years LEFT on his contract he wouldnt be untradeable. And it's fine if he's slowing down alittle, as long as he follows Jagr's precedent and uses superior hockey sense and puck skills to make up for it.

Were they the same age in their final years? Richards regular season are noticeably better, though. 2 more points in 6 less games. Richards had a 1.35pt/game avg, and Laughton had a 1.14

Not saying he is. But Mike Richards spent his first year as a 4th line center. People are saying it's a waste to burn an ELC year for Laughton to play on the 4th line. Was it also a waste to do the same with Richards?
- jmatchett383

Mike Richards and Jeff Carter were old enough to jump send them up and down from the AHL when the Phantoms played across the street from the Wachovia Center. Richards and Carted were a lock to make the team because of their Calder Cup win and Gold Medal accomplishments that year. They were instant locks after trading away Jeremy Roenick, letting Mark Recchi walk and buying out both Tony Amongst and John LeClair. The Flyers didn't give themselves an option. They wanted to go younger and allow Gagne to become a star playing next to Foesberg. I still think think what happens with Laughton is 50/50. We are still a good team with or without Laughton.

so you are OK with him getting 5 years 25M and then he could be traded when he was 36-37 yrs old?

I guess if the salary cap goes up there might be interest, I would also have concerns they would be stuck and have to use a regular buy out on him the last two years if he can't play

I'm not a fan of these 5 yr deals for guys in their 30s

I think Hartnell's was too long as well.

Okay. But was that a wasteful decision to have your 1st round pick playing 4th line minutes his first ELC year?

We're already buying out Streit after 2 years, can't add Vinny too.

Not really, just saying it wouldn't be the end of the world if we gave him that.

Not the end of the world, but supremely stupid nonetheless.

In a couple of years, Vinny will be where Danny B is now... a finesse player you can't use in a bottom-six role, a high-priced roadblock to the kids, a candidate for salary-dump/buy-out.

Until Laughton gets the label of future leader and gets the international experience, to me he is more like a Max Talbot and we already have one of those. Will Scott Laughton one day make the Olympic team and win a gold medal? I would say doubtful. Not since he never played for the world juniors imo.

Richie's final season in junior coincided with the last NHL lockout. He also went on to play with the Phantoms in the playoffs.

Prior to Richie's final year in junior, he was better than a PPG player for 2 straight seasons with Kitchener.

Laughton, on the other hand, hadn't begun scoring at that clip until this past season. He simply doesn't have the offensive pedigree that Richards had.
