Anaheim does not need to move a goalie at all. - eichiefs9
I suppose they don't have to but are rumored to. Still need to sign a few RFA and only have $7 mill in space. Plus their owner isn't one to spend to ceiling |

Probably...but the cap will move up significantly next year and the year after that. This is the year for Snow to active on the free agency market. A lot of big spending teams are against the cap like San Jose , Vancouver, Philly, Minnesota, Boston and maybe the Rangers so the Islanders have a shot to do something... - kear20
"The year for Snow to be active on the free agency market" is the worst class of free agents in a long time. Some of these guys are going to get absolutely mind-numbingly stupid money. Clarkson is asking for $6M per, as is Horton. Neither are worth that. |

One and that's a gigantic maybe. To be backups. To a guy with 25 NHL games worth of experience.
Again, they don't need to move Hiller. Palmieri will be the only RFA getting a significant raise. Selanne signs beyond-manageable 1 year contracts now, if he chooses to continue his career. It's a sellers market for Hiller, Anaheim isn't having their hand forced at all. |

I actually worded it poorly all around.
What I should have, more simply, stated is that they hold the upper hand because they aren't in dire need to move him. They're in the drivers' seat here, they'll either get a great return for him or they'll hang on to a Cup winning goaltender and have a nice tandem. They win either way.
If they don't think he'll re-sign (either at a reasonable price or they think he wants to test UFA) they can wait until March and address his status at the trade deadline. |

It figures the year the Cap goes down and the big spenders cannot spend, there is not a lot of talent for the Isles to sign . |

I think a major trade is coming. Wouldn't shock me to see either Ryan or Vanek as an Islander.

I'm all for it as long as they can fill holes in goal and on D. Hope guys like Strome, Nelson, and Reinhart are not moved. I can see Lee being included if needed. |

Pronman's writeup on our draft...
New York Islanders
First round: Pulock has been one of the top offensive defensemen in the WHL for the last few seasons. He is a great passer with a simply outstanding point shot. His scoring potential is really significant. He is just a solid skater, with decent to solid defensive ability. Some scouts are more bearish on those aspects but he should be a very good player given his offensive attributes.
Rest of the picks: McAdam is a toolsy, athletic goaltender who still needs fine tuning. Cammarata put up tremendous numbers for a player his age in the USHL. He is a dynamic puck handler and playmaker but is extremely small. Crus Rydberg was the second line center for Sweden's U18s. He has good puck possession skills and above-average speed although he is a little small. Quine is a re-entry after being originally picked by Detroit. He is a very skilled player who skates well but his defensive game still needs work.
Summary: The Islanders brought in a quality amount of talent in this draft class. I'm not crazy about how early they went after McAdam although it is reasonable to think he would have been gone by 106. Pulock, Cammarata, Quine, and Crus Rydberg are all very gifted players, and if the Islanders truly hit on any, this could be a good draft class. Of course, these players all carry moderate to above-average risk as well so there is downside to this class, too. |

Assigning Grades to team based on Entry Draft Selections
Before you e-mail or PM me angered by my disrespect and misjudgment of your favorite team's choice, let me one make it clear concerning this specific draft: All team GMs and fans could say how they did great. Or how poorly they did. Because of the depth this draft class at the first four tiers (See Draft Tier explanations elsewhere on DraftSite…),this draft class, from pick 1 to pick 211, may bring major contributors and impact players to many NHL teams. Whether they admit it or not, NHL teams hope that the high character youngster they select not only graduate to the pro game, but develop into high impact stars, no matter which slotting there are chosen in. This draft provides MANY chances of unearth those type players.
My grades will be based NOT on the amount of picks, but on the possibility of the drafted prospects making contributions on NHL rosters FIVE years from now.
I will start by saying the upside of this class is by far one of the finest, but I and NHL teams cannot accurate predict NHL success for them at this juncture, just draw on my opinions of the player's canvass at this particular juncture in the journey.
Of, course I will bump up grades for team where they took my favorites, or prospects are clearly ahead of the curve towards NHL long term advancement and domination. Value in the players picked and where they are picked will also be key factors.
At first glance, I like a lot of team boards.

New York Islanders
Grade B
Ryan Pulock(14)
Picking from the centre of the first round, the Islanders selected Ryan Pulock who has tremendous upside along with the tastes and hardest shot in the draft. The didn't have a second but did have picks in every round. When they returned to the mike in the third round, but there selections were not necessarily ones I liked even long term.they chose American goalie Eamon McAdam, who will need lots of time and improvement, Taylor Cammarata who is fearless wing, a second developmental goaler in Williams, Crus-Rydberg, who is an smaller finisher, also a smaller guy, and Alan Quine, an undersized center forward, and Burroughs whs eagle in his own zone will need improvement before he can show off his PP passing. The sleeper Pulock is the only reason I didn't drop their grade to B minus. - wiz1901

Seems like a fair writeup. I liked the Pulock pick. Then again, I have no idea on these players. Still have no idea why 2 goalies needed to be picked? |

I would have been happier with just one, but it's never bad to keep the system stocked with varying levels of goaltending prospects. At a position that is so hit or miss, you need to have options.
I love the Pulock pick. There was only a handful of solid prospects taken after him. I think it was a real good pick. From all I've gathered post-draft, our later selections were boom-or-bust type kids. If one hits and Pulock lives up to the hype, it was a fantastic draft. |

I'm good with the D man but the goalies were a head scratcher. Then again, we should have seen this coming with the Nilsson and Kosi draft. |

If only Pulock was ready now. It's the hardest thing waiting on these prospects. It will be easier though if the Isles can now sign quality FA's. |

...Neither did Wang, who negotiated the 2006 contract with DiPietro. In the run-up to that highly unusual negotiation, DiPietro fired his agent and Wang fired the Islanders’ general manager.
“Charles had this special relationship with Rick,” said Neil Smith, the Islanders’ general manager for 41 days in 2006. “I think it was definitely one of the reasons I left.”
Paul Krepelka, the agent DiPietro fired, said via e-mail on Monday. “I have no comment whatsoever. I couldn’t care less.”...

Chances of getting an NHL ready kid in the middle of the first round are slim. If we continue to grow and have success as an organization, get used to drafting kids that are going to take a few years to see get a shot. |

The whole Neil Smith thing still bothers me. I know I should forget it. Neil was wrong to take the job when he knew it was a committee setup though. Still hurt the team big time. |

We have to rely less and less on rushing these kids to the NHL as far as talent, I guess we will find out soon enough how much is salary related? |
