I'm not sure I agree with you there. Sure it's not going to make him an all star overnight. But every athlete knows that winning is half mental. What are you willing to do to reach the next level? There is ALWAYS someone faster, stronger, meaner, more skilled - doesn't mean that you roll over and let them win. I think it's a small edge but it exists.
We can agree to disagree.

Yeah, I want the half-starved, crazy-eyed kid who will do anything to make it to the show/win over the guy who's never really had to put in the work because he was born with all the tools. It's Claude Giroux versus Alex Daigle.

Zadorov wasnt taken because he's Russian, and we all know what the Flyers history is with Russian players... end of story.

I thought Morin was scouted by Nolet but he's not handling the Q anymore, so I'm not sure.

Obviously would have been nice for Nichushkin to fall 1 more spot down to us, but again, not so sure we would have taken him even if that happened.

The biggest question mars is the round 3 pick. Other than that I'll give Homer a respectable B- for this draft.

Weren't the Flyers the first NHL team to draft a Russian player?

Couldn't agree more on Goulbourne. I guess they feel that a "safe" bet to make the NHL as a 4th liner is better than ending up with a guy who could end up an AHL all star.

Before the draft I thought trading down and getting two blue chip defense prospects in the first round would have been a fabulous outcome.

I remember Bill wrote about Hagg and said the Flyers have been paying particular attention to him. I asked what are the chances Hagg drops to them at #41? I was told next to zero chance.

I think they did very, very well here.

The goaltender position is still bugging me, I guess I need a little patience to see what they do Friday.

Also the fact that Coburn's name was thrown around in the trade rumors is annoying me. I guess you expect a player to be professional, but if I were in Coburn's place I would be a little ticked off and not sure what to expect from him next year if he isn't traded.

- Marc D

normally i'd have the same reservations there but a lot of the talk really made it seem as if a couple pf teams were coming to the flyers about coburn, not that the flyers were looking to dump him

which is more flattering to him

Bill (or anyone),

how would you rank the current Flyers Defensive prospects at this point in terms of making it to the NHL, not worrying about when?

Good for Bob. Not a bad deal for Columbus. If he works out great, if he doesn't then it's only 2 years.
We all knew he wasn't coming back here...

Was Simon Nolet the scout most responsible for the Morin pick?

5.5 - 6M seems to be the going rate for perceived #1 goalies.

What do you think Rask is going to get?

Bob certainly had a fabulous half season.
It's a bit risky, but at least only 2 years.

I think there was a real chance he was going to the KHL if Columbus tried to play hardball with him.

I think it's way too much coming off a great shortened season where he won the Vezina especially as a RFA. But in the end, with the possibility of a KHL deal looming, Columbus didn't have much of a choice if they wanted to keep him.

Homer:

"Like I said, he's come a long way in the last little while. Simon Nolet, who works in Québec, and Todd Hearty, our other scout who's in Québec, they've spent a lot of time following Samuel around. Obviously they're very excited that we were able to draft him."

Ballard placed on waivers by Van.

But not the type of waiver that proceeds a buy out, whatever that means.

edit to add from TSN

The move is not a precursor to a compliance buyout since the Canucks placed Ballard on conventional waivers and not the unconditional $100 waivers necessary to facilitate such a move.

Interesting, John Shannon tweeted it was to start the CBO process. My understanding is that regular waivers is the route for any buy out, while unconditional waivers is just for contract termination.

Are we still in the window for compliance buyouts? I thought they had to be announced before the draft?
Or am I wrong and it's just before FA?
