If Jeff O'Neil was talking about using a second CBO, he should read some more and see that deals signed after the lockout ended aren't able to be CBO'ed.
- steelydan

i guess it would be splitting hairs to say that a team could still buy him out, only it wouldn't be a cbo, just a regular buy out.

Yes, but then there'd still be a cap hit involved for the team buying out the player.

Look I dont know if this topic has been blogged about tonight ( I just got off work)...However, while at work it came to my attention that there were rumors about the Flyers possibly signing Tim Thomas to fill there vacant goalie spot. What scares me is from a hockey standpoint it makes sense for the Flyers. He could be had probably at a reasonable cap hit for few years and is someone to platoon with Mason to see if he is the future. However, with that all said, I hope against hopes that the Flyers do not sign Thomas. I am not going to get political on here cause nobody needs to hear it, but its not about what he believes its how he goes about it. You just got out of a PR nightmare with Bryz, which is going to cost them a lot to get out of, you certainly don't need to get into another one with this clown. He is going to bring unneeded drama to the locker room and could be a constant distraction to a group of young players they may not know how to handle it. Please Flyers.....STAY AWAY!!!...........END RANT

I will blog about it tomorrow. Regarding the distraction factor, two Vezina Trophies and a Conn Smythe create a degree of locker room tolerance factor as long as the guy would keep stopping the puck.

O'Neil is the garbage on the radio I only brought it up because I thought it was ridicules. Although I still think Vinnie has some production in him, I still question his health and to a point his drive. Seems like someone who enjoyed chillin in TB with no media pressure.

A goalie with a save % of .920 goes from distraction to quirky.

Yes, that's possible but I don't know that it would increase his value all that much. Other teams will still say he's a guy who has had back surgery, tore his Achilles tendon and had surgery, separated his shoulder and had a torn rotator cuff repaired surgically within a year PLUS he's a UFA after next season even if he is healthy?"

That doesn't mean another team won't take a chance on him being healthy. But it does mean they won't trade anything of value even if the Flyers eat part of the cap hit for next season.

The one thing that eating some salary on Flyers' own cap might do is open up a few more possible trading partners beyond floor teams. Most every team needs defensemen and Meszaros is a decent one when healthy.

- bmeltzer

Instead of dumping Mez and then turning to UFA, it might make more sense to trade him for another team's problem player... David Booth, Drew Stafford, Upshall... players with similar performance/injury concerns, are around the same age, make around the same money, but fill the forward need for the Flyers.

I respect that aspect, but after the bryz distraction. Don't you think the players on this team are just exhausted by locker room drama? Not to mention that despite the fact he is a talented goalie, you have to sell a guy who basically quit on his team mates to a hard working blue collar city...Am I totally out of line to think this?

He was never a distraction for the Boston Bruins win he backstopped them to win the Cup and a Conn Smythe trophy. Personalities aren't an issue when a team is winning, if Bryz was a superstar goalie he'd still be on the team. But hes a goof and played even worse sometimes. I'm not gonna bash Thomas or say no way because of his political, religious, or any other non-hockey related views.

Flyers would be crazy to dump Mez AND throw in picks. Way too early for that. He's about to be decalared fit to play. See how he does in the pre-season. I could see teams going as high as a conditional 3rd rd pick. He plays X-games/minutes Flyers get a third. X- games/minutes a 4th...

Less his save percentage and more his ability to stop pucks when his team needed him the most. That was my biggest knock on Bryz. When I felt like the team needed a big save (not a play of the year save, just a big save in a game) he was more often that not less effective than swiss cheese.

There's still no proof that there was locker room drama because of Bryz. It was all rumors and media. I'm pretty sure his teammates all liked Bryz.

Where does it say that in the Collective Bargaining Agreement? I'm looking at it right now -- page 288, Article 50.9 (i)(ii) -- and I don't see anything in the compliance buy out section that says anything specifying that only deals signed under the previous CBA are eligible for compliance buyouts.

Not doubting you. I just can't find the rule.

He became a distraction the very next season, and that team was a 102 point team and division winner.

It had nothing to do with his views, rather the way he expressed them. You can't drop bombs on facebook and then not answer questions about it, leaving your teammates to have to answer for you.

If a goalie being well-liked by all of his teammates was a pre-requisite for team success, Martin Biron would be the most sought-after goaltender in the NHL.

Bryz doesnt seem like the guy that goes out of his way to be a ass and put down people like I am guessing a guy like Avery or maybe even Dion although i am not sure. Seems like he keeps to him self and is clueless to whatever is going on around him

EDIT i def meant to have Thomas name in there

i think your missing the point....IF there is any locker room drama, which we all know there is, Tim Thomas just by his beliefs and the fact the philly media are goinng to constantly ask about them are going to cause more....all I am saying....much happier with Emery or Halak....just my opinion and I respect all of yours its what makes are country great

Thomas posted a .920 save % and 2.36 GAA in his last season. Nabokov had solid regular season numbers (.910 2.50), but fell apart in the playoffs (.842% 4.44).

Nabokov would basically be handing the keys to Mason.

I think on a risk/reward scale, Timmy is probably the highest risk and the highest reward of all of our goalie options.
