That has zero to do with MLSEL, and everything to do with the CBA. I think he'll resign with TO...just not for 8 years.
- TheTaoOfSemenko

The Leafs need to offer 8 to sign him and imo, they will.

Incorrect. The Leafs can offer Phil 8 years. Every other team 7 years.
- RogerRoeper

So, $64million instead of $56 million?

Sedins will be tricky as both need to go in the trade.
- RogerRoeper

Teams would do it, and they would pony up big packages.

Couple more drafts like this one and it may be possible. Of course they have no more Schneiders to trade but the Sedins would still bring great value if and when they decided it was time to move them.
- TheTaoOfSemenko

If the GM handles the Sedin trade anything like he has handled the Goaltending issue then they are in trouble. Again.

Yeah. What's the deal with that? Do they both share the same contract?

The one big issue is Gillis really should have called Luongo before he made this deal.

Ballard on waivers? More of Gillis' mess being cleaned up. Too bad we lost a 1st round pick and a 35 goal scoring rookie to a player sitting in the press room and eventually on waivers.

This is totally (frank)ed. Everyone is praising Gillis for taking one step forward after 5 back. This fan base is so predictable.....

- boonerbuck

Stop living in the past Booner, what good does it do? He needs to clean up the mess he's created and move forward, not wallow in the mistakes of the past. Do you mope around worrying about your past?

Great day, Canucks stacked the prospect pool. Better to have horvat then give Luongo away.

Why are leafs fans trolling so hard, our prospects are better, our team is better, and our city is better.n oh ya, and our mayor smokes pot, not crack.

- Scooby_Doo

prob cause we had to listen to your blogger propose deals straight out of nhl 13 for your goalies and fans echoing the same thing. no matter how much sense from fans other teams tried to talk into you guys, nobody listened. now the trade actually happens and its less than even we proposed. other than that I'm not sure.

here's hoping esplen learned somethin from this and his trade proposals become a little more realistic in the future.

At least it's only 2 years and not 40 like Luongo's contract. Lol!!

Apparently the owner actually flew to Florida and spoke with Roberto in person. I'd say that's a bit better than a phone call.

If ownership really wants to apologize to Luongo they should fire Gillis.
- Jeffmt

Aquilini and Gillis touch wienies every Friday night, so I'm told, they'll never get rid of this guy.

Bad optics but like I said earlier, considering the goalie market, it was a great return. Goalies go for peanuts.

They most certainly are better now and better in the future, if you can't see that you keep drinking that 45 year old kool-aid.
- LeftCoaster

Ok, first off, the fact that a Vancouver fan would bring up the Leafs cup drought is pathetic, and you know why. How are Vancouver going to be better in the future? The Canucks prospect pool is a bit of a joke, Horvat helps but doesn't change the situation. Find one fan of another team who would be willing to trade their prospects for yours. As for now? Lets wait and see what your team looks like when Gillis has finished getting under the cap.

We have more playoff wins in the past five years than they do in the past 15, see I can play too!
- LeftCoaster

You are correct. No one was questioning what the Canucks have done. It's where they are now.

You know what's a joke...... Leafs fans trying to trash talk any GM or organization.

The circus sideshow that is toronto is ever alive.

Team makes the playoffs after 15 years and loses a round in the biggest game 7 collapse in the history of planet Earth. 10 min left in the game and they blow a 3 goal lead?!

How is it the leafs fans have any grounds to trash talk on what a good or bad GM is? Nonis when he left Vancouver had left the prospect cupboard completely dry and wasted picks on useless trade deadline pick ups. Gillis other than overestimating Luongo's value in the cap world has had a fairly good record. Free Agents like Hamhuis, Garrison, etc... have signed for less to play in Vancouver. When has any top free agent actively signed with Toronto (even guys from Toronto don't sign there).

It's really pathetic of Leafs fans who are over the moon with a playoff appearance to criticize fans of an organization whose goal year in and year out is the Stanley Cup not just showing up to the playoffs. Regardless of what happens, the Canucks over the past 10 years or so are always fighting to get into the SCF. The leafs are a happy just to fight for a playoff spot.

The difference between the organizations is light and day in terms of expectations.

So many false statements in there...no pointing in arguing with you.

I will say this though...I have a pretty good idea what direction our respective teams are heading and I'm pretty confident we'll be fine.

I don't have any doubt that Gillis began a mini rebuild yesterday. I think circumstances may have forced his hand. Regardless of all the factors leading into yesterday's deal the Canucks did the right thing. The loss of Schnieder does not have a short term consequence, Luongo is still a very good goalie. Long term, a small rebuild at this point makes a lot of sense.

This is not correct. From 99-2004, the Leafs won 8 rounds alone.

No one picked outside of the top 5 is "can't miss". He's a coin toss.
- Jeffmt
According to you? The rankings are only based on opinion. Apparently some GM's had Horvat ranked as high as 4th.

But that's the thing. It wasn't a great return. He had a much better offer on the table from you guys, and he turned it down. (frank), even Bernier got a better return(biased)

Vancouver has been an elite team for a bunch of years now. It is the way the competitive cycle works. When your a top contender you don't get good draft picks.
But yesterday was a vert good start to a mini rebuild. Long term this is going to prove out to be a very smart move by Gillis.
