You are correct. No one was questioning what the Canucks have done. It's where they are now.

He will be okay. Horvat has star potential, Frattin doesn't.

Schneider deal brought may more upside.

Bad optics but like I said earlier, considering the goalie market, it was a great return. Goalies go for peanuts.

Whoa! Don't tell Buffalo fans that!
Did you see the haul they're talking about getting for Ryan Miller?

There's something you don't know about Schneider.
You will find out soon enough...

- Scooby_Doo

I love this. As soon as Schneider is gone we start to hear these mysterious rumours of some anxiety disorder affecting him in the playoffs.

Nothing like an organization and fanbase to sling mud after a player is traded. Stay classy Vancouver.

They can buy him out next year. They have two years to exercise the amnesty buy out. But, I don't think they need to buy him out. The latter year actual contract dollars are pretty good for a back up goalie. In a few year Gillis decision of yesterday will probably look pretty good.

Agree with Bernier...for the moment. Time will tell how good the Schneider return was.

He wanted an in division premium. He misjudged what we'd be willing to give up.

- TheTaoOfSemenko

So if we traded and got a second rounder also and you knock us out of the playoffs with Schneider ,would that extra second rounder be worth it to the Canucks?

Gillis made the right move and got their man and cap space.

You are missing the point, Mr. Esplen.

29 other GMs didn't want Lu for free, because his contract will cause salary cap mayhem down the road.

Guess what is still down Vancouver's road?

Yeah, yeah, blabbity-blabbity Lu is still a great goalie.

29 other GMs didn't want him.

- Atomic Wedgie

The GM's figured they could get him on a UFA deal. I guess they were wrong.

Good return for Schneider. Fair deal for both sides. Jersey gets a replacement for Brodeur. Vancouver gets Horvat who looks like he will be an amazing 2 way player. A younger version of Kesler without the diving. I think he will be the captain of the Canucks down the road. Loungo is apparently upset but he's a professional and won't breach his contract as some have said. Probably gonna be the starter for Canada at Sochi. Still wish you guys had bought him out so we could sign him for a shorter term.
- Ihatebrianburke

I'm sure Kesler will take Bo under his wing and teach him everything he knows

Couple more drafts like this one and it may be possible. Of course they have no more Schneiders to trade but the Sedins would still bring great value if and when they decided it was time to move them.

Might as well be....they're talking Brayden Schenn, a 1st and a top prospect.

I was actually pretty excited when I heard the trade announced. I have no doubt that teams conspired to squeeze Gillis. They believed he had no option but to deal Luongo at a discount price. It was a self serving position. By holding up the Canucks in dealing Luongo for fair value they were repressing the market value for a starting goalie.

In a brilliant single stroke Gillis reversed his bad position. The truth is on opening day the Canucks goaltending is just as good as what it was for the last olayoff game. They picked up a top 10 pick. And they got a head start on a bit of rebuild that everyone knows is needed.

Much of the hostility your hearing this morning is driven by the fact Gillis did such a good job in escaping the trap that others had set for him. Vancouver is in a far better position this morning than what they were at this time yesterday. For some reason that makes some fans very angry. My guess is they were hoping that Gillis would be forced into a humiliating deal that would have weakened the team.

- spatso

ummmmmmmmmmmmmm...

me thinks that the "trap" was more of a "_hit hole" ... and that was one that Mr Gillis got that shovel out and dug himself.

and whether you are a Canuck fan or not, whether you think the Canucks best goaltender was Schneider or Luongo, whether you believe that Gillis got fair value for Schneider or not (Horvat was a great pick btw)... there's only one fact that matters coming out of this gong-show... the Canucks lost a significant roster player yesterday... and didn't get one in return.

I meant that it was par for the course. If anyone in the division wanted Schneider, they were going to have to overpay because Gillis didnt really want to move him within the division. Right call by Gillis...and the correct refusal by MacT.

Well leafs fans pumped Kadri's tires just as much. I thought Tyler Toffoli was the second coming...it remains to be seen how good horvat will be.

Ownership pays the bills not Gillis. How is having 2 legit #1 goalies Gillis fault? Is it Gillis's fault that his coach couldn't keep both happy? He has had to deal with a bunch of coaches and their ego's as well as players trying to do and say the right thing for everyone. His job has not been easy. I would love his job right now. Everyone wants his head and he still makes moves. Firing Gillis is not the answer. I don't like how this had to go down but you play the hand your dealt. I look forward to seeing more moves and after this situation anything could happen. Imo this has been one of the most exciting and scary off seasons ever. I love it
- thundachunk

It's his fault that he gave a contract to Luongo that no other team would take for free right now. It's his fault that he publicly proclaimed Schneider the new #1 goalie and told everyone that Luongo was on his way out of town. It's his fault that he turned down actual trade offers for Luongo in the early goings and couldn't find any when it got down to the wire. It's his fault that he currently has something like $4M in cap space to fill about 7 positions (apparently?). It's his fault that Grabner and Hodgson are playing for other teams while Vancouver is trying to rid themselves of Ballard and Kassian is a fringe player. He hasn't been good.

Bo Horvat is a nice prospect; however the Canucks still need to address the 3C slot for next season. I don’t buy the suggestion he will fill that role right now, and they would be foolish to bank on that. As of right now they still haven’t gained any size or grit that will contribute this fall. If they sit on this too long they won’t have to trade into the top ten next year.

Schroeder can play 3 rd line for a year or two while Horvat Shinkurak Gauce and Lain develop.

it would seem that the story line isn't really Luongo and isn't really Schneider. Never has been.

The story line is and legitimately should remain focused on the ring master, not the lions. Mr Gillis screwed the pooch on this last year at the draft and prior to free agency by massively overvaluing what he could and should get in return for the Luongo contract. He continued to make a mess of the situation throughout last summer. He furthered throughout the lock out and continued it through the shortened season and since then.

The question was, is and remains how bad in the CAP situation that Gillis has so artfully created? Canuck fans should be asking that question - and whether Gillis has earned the confidence of the organization to continue with the GM role.

And of course Luongo will live up to his contractual obligation - he isn't a prima donna... can you imagine if it was Miller in the same/similar situation?

Do you really think any deals were lined up through the lockout with the landscape about to change?

Apparently the owner actually flew to Florida and spoke with Roberto in person. I'd say that's a bit better than a phone call.

personally I thought he should have been traded sooner and let lack develop. With all the flack feaster gets, I'm enjoying the spotlight gillis gets for this blunder.

He did well getting Horvat out of it. But the whole thing was poorly handled with luongo.

Aquilini was probably supposed to talk to luongo sooner but was busy trying to sort out his escort for the evening.

I wonder what bloated's memo from the team and owner said or if he even got one. I guess I am just wondering if they are doing damage control. Lots of mixed feeling between fans.
