wrong waivers for buyout . they cant afford to buyout anyone. this is for regular waivers , where the cap hit stays on .......

Ownership is too cheap to do it looks like.
- RogerRoeper

It'll be cheaper next summer so maybe they're just delaying the inevitable? Teams with back diving contracts (and there are quite a few) will have some tough choices next summer - that Cap Recapture is harsh.

I won't even comment on the Schneider/Luongo/Gillis fiasco.......too easy.

I like Vancouver's draft a lot. But didn't Gillis have a "Bo Horvat" already and traded him away to Buffalo?

VAN's Keith Ballard is on conventional waivers. Not $100 unconditional waivers, which is necessary for buyout purposes.

People always forget goalies are worth very little on the market. Hell, days before Bernier was traded a guy from Sportsnet claimed Philly should and would give up the #11 overall pick+ for him.

Most teams have # 1 goalies. The market is overcrowded.

I don't think anyone is suggesting he will breach his contract but if he really doesn't want to be there then why would they keep him. Luongo could make this difficult for the Canucks/Gillis if he wanted to.
- MadManPaddy

They'll keep him because they have nowhere else to send him, that much is obvious. He'll play and honor his contract for the same reason. They may not like it, but both parties are aware that they're stuck with each other for a long time.

Not a horrible deal but Gillis should have taken the best deal regardless of divisional rivals. It'll work out ok for the team, Lou will play well, he's a pro, and though there's some bad blood, that will all be erased if Gillis gets fired. If he doesn't get fired then that means the team and Lou are probably playing very well. Either way, I don't see this being a huge problem for the team, but if I werte a fan of the team, I would've preferred them aquire a player that would be able to impact the team right now, not in 2-3 years.

no worries, that is about to be reversed . nucks will be lucky to make the playoffs next year , and every after that .....

I was actually pretty excited when I heard the trade announced. I have no doubt that teams conspired to squeeze Gillis. They believed he had no option but to deal Luongo at a discount price. It was a self serving position. By holding up the Canucks in dealing Luongo for fair value they were repressing the market value for a starting goalie.

In a brilliant single stroke Gillis reversed his bad position. The truth is on opening day the Canucks goaltending is just as good as what it was for the last olayoff game. They picked up a top 10 pick. And they got a head start on a bit of rebuild that everyone knows is needed.

Much of the hostility your hearing this morning is driven by the fact Gillis did such a good job in escaping the trap that others had set for him. Vancouver is in a far better position this morning than what they were at this time yesterday. For some reason that makes some fans very angry. My guess is they were hoping that Gillis would be forced into a humiliating deal that would have weakened the team.

I think the Horvat pick was a terrible mistake,. That's the issue I have with the trade. I think #9 overall is good value for Schneider.

Great day, Canucks stacked the prospect pool. Better to have horvat then give Luongo away.

Why are leafs fans trolling so hard, our prospects are better, our team is better, and our city is better.n oh ya, and our mayor smokes pot, not crack.

Future wise they are. But that's all your post is concentrating on. What about next season? It hasn't made them better at all?

My feeling is you're patting Gillis on the back because Leaf fans are ripping him, and of course, you're taking the opposite opinion.

You don't want an unhappy mistreated guy playing for your team

What can they do though, send him home and continue to pay him? If they could have gotten rid of him Schneider would still be their goalie today.

Its a given the Canucks handled the Lu/Schneider situation badly. But the mistakes were made last year. Yesterday they cleaned up the mess the best way possible.

Lu will get a hero's welcome back in Vancouver. The support he gets from the fans will be unprecedented. And his motivation level will be off the charts. The entire league turned him down ... he will be out to prove them all wrong.

We picked up 2 awesome prospects and cleared $4M of cap space.

I am very happy with how yesterday played out.

(P.S. @smackdaddy thanks for the info on horvat. Nothing is better than hearing from someone who has watched a prospect play. Thanks!!)

- whales

I agree with lots of this. Gillis cleaned up sone of his mess yesterday. He certainly had pretty limited options but that is directly the result of how badly he managed things. I don't think the real issue is whether or not Luongo will be motivated. He is a proud guy and will want to prove everyone wrong. How well he does over a long season is another question. He is not young and sow believe he is losing leg strength/speed. Fans will turn on him pretty quickly if he plays badly.

For a team that is win now, this is a mess.

Cap Recapture Penalty. People who understand it would have applauded the Nucks for buying out Lou ....just as those that understand it applaud the Flyers and Lightning for doing the same.

When you take into consideration what Canucks fans have been saying Schneider is worth, it's horrible value. Everyone was saying he'd pull in a king's ransom if Gillis decided to trade him and instead he got a first round wildcard. That's not good.

When you consider what goalies typically go for its actually great value.

They most certainly are better now and better in the future, if you can't see that you keep drinking that 45 year old kool-aid.
