I agree he is in the 1.5 to 2 range but would be offer sheeted 2-3
- vancouverdawg

I will not be happy if it's over $1.5.

Unless it's a longer deal that takes up a year or two of his UFA eligible years.

Don't kid yourself. He has Gillis by the balls. Any offer sheet north of 2.5 and Gillis' "reset" hits the fan .
- Gullzy

I gotta go with Fosco on this one 1.5 firm if not less. No joke.

I think he's a 1.25 for 2 years or 1.5 for 3

I'd be happy with this.

I think 1.5 is the right number, but if Fosco thinks that Tanev has no leverage; he's wrong.

He really doesn't.

Look at Alzner, Del Zotto, and Subban's recent contracts.

Tanev hasn't proven to be even close to any of them.

Guy has only played over 18 minutes a game something like 22 times over the last two seasons.

I like Tanev a lot, but let's not kid ourselves here, he's played sheltered minutes and has very little leverage.

Like I said, only way he gets over $1.5 is if he gives up a year or two of UFA eligibility.

Waiting till July 5th to see if other teams are interested.

Edit

To add to that:

If he signs a offer sheet north of 2.5, Gillis and Co's cap plan will be in shambles.

sorry man, with the cap going down, it sort of mitigates any leverage and MG would just match....how many offer sheets are offered every year?

No leverage.....

Waiting and hoping a team offer sheets him is not leverage, it's a tactic.

MG has more leverage—you get paid the big dollars for production, and as steady and good as Tanev has looked on the defensive end, he hasn't produced.

Offer sheets are not that regular an occurrence.

I think he signs for around 1.75

Leverage, or no leverage.

We wont know until he signs, but I'll venture that it'll be less than that.

Jeff Petry would be a comparable and was more productive offensively and avg's $1.75 mill a year.....

- vancouverdawg

Short deals are in order, time to prove yourself boys. short term and small money, earn a raise when/if the cap rises.

Its all about expectations. Look at Schroeder. If people think he is a franchise top 6 player then in my opinion its a bust. If all you want out of a late 1st round pick is 3rd line center and some good minutes then Schroeder is a great pick and will fill that role perfectly.

Simple question - when a GM drafts a player what does he hope to get out of that player?

Its really not a simple question though.. I think outside of top 5 picks (maybe even top 3) GM's are playing a game of duck duck goose. In some scenarios.. a GM is picking a player who is considered a safe pick.. one who will almost guarantee to be an NHLer but a lower potential.. 3rd/4th line type guy.

In other instances.. GMs take that high risk, high reward type player. It just becomes a best guess game. Some obviously do better than others.

My biggest question for next year is what to do we do with the Kassassin, Schroeds, Jensen and Gaunce
(Who thinks Horvat and Shink will make the club)

- JameyVinnick

Kassian plays in Vancouver next season. Barring injuries the rest don't.

What happens with Marty/Corey this year? 50/50 split, Schneider is the backup, again?
- 1970vintage

Marty'll be hurt by training camp. Cory'll play all 82!

This draft or last draft? Remeber the word is Lu said no to a few teams, he holds the final trump card in all of this.
- LeftCoaster

Lu never said no according to himself. This is a strange statement....

The Canucks couldn't afford me, although Gillis doesn't seem to mind throwing good money away on poop players? (Booth, Me & Ballard)

Ok I'll do this - 1st round picks at or under the age of 25 (?) that were drafted or traded for. Oh never mind, it's not as bad as you're making it out to be. He got rid of Grabner and kept Raymond, bid deal. He got rid of Hodgson but he got Kassian, big deal. He got rid of Schneider but he got Horvat, so what, I like our prospect pool now and he had to do something. Where he (frank)ed up is he should have traded Schneider last summer, chalk another one on his list.

- LeftCoaster

Keeping Raymond over Grabner turned out to be a mistake. Kassian for Hodgson was a complete misread as well. Remember the comments from Gillis..."instantly bigger tougher going into the playoffs with this top 6 player.... immediately he said.... we are still waiting on this project going into a 3rd season since the trade.... clearly Gillis thought Kassian was years ahead of where he actually is. Its like Boinker is doing the scouting or something.

Schneider for a draft pick? Complete mismanagement..... they kept the two goalies til both of them were undervalued on the market and never did keeping both pay off for anything relevant.... just a waste and it hurt this team if you remember how it was handled the last two seasons....

Im glad you are happy about the prospect pool. Imagine what it would have been like to keep all the decent ones we had instead of gutting the teams up and comers and trading away Schneider and possibly Edler who is another developed 1st rounder of ours that looks to be on his way out. He just signed with a team that wants to trade him just like Schneider... Gillis rep must be so low by now. I easily see thise team not having much respect for him after what heès done to many of the them the last two seasons....

Gillis reset is going to be about killing this team for the next couple of seasons. We are losing our players in their prime, keeping the 30+ years olds and waiting 3 years for the 2013 draft to pay off by the looks of things.
