You can't make trades if they aren't there...
- Deadmau55

And the trades that were there appeared to suck. Can you imagine giving up the 7th + Paajarvi + Klefbom or whatever for Schneider?

Maybe nobody. But I know Pittsburgh also offered him a deal and he chose Edmonton. Might turn out to be great, might be dog sh!t, but at 1.5M I would say he will probably end up a pretty fair value contract.

oh wait, now I know why NJ made that deal! I am sure that NJ will now turn around and trade Schneider straight up for Kris Letang because I just read on Ian Esplen's blog that Cory Schneider = Kris Letang.

my bad.

I am not sure what is more depressing.

The fact that for the first time ever I 110% agree with Clouts or that there is a very high probability the Oilers will be worse next season than last.

We did not address any team needs for next year. None, zero, zilch, nadda. If the draft goes very well both Nurse and one other from this years draft will be playing effectively on our team in 3-5 years.

We have lost all bargaining power for the up coming season and have nothing to show for it.

Yup for all the smoke there was absolutely no fire in this draft. Trading down with both 2nd round picks is ridiculous. I think MacT needs a quick refresher that the odds of finding an NHL player are better earlier in the draft. They certainly drafted a quantity of players however the quality is certainly lacking.

Its tough to continuously see players traded that would help the Oilers. Its hard to know if the calls were made and the Oilers came up short or if they didnt even try.

Sorry Canuck fans but I have to laugh at the Schneider trade. All these months of goalie turmoil in Vancouver and they trade Schneider for a 1st. Canuck fans certainly missed the mark with all the claims of what a great return he would bring.

Poor Louongo. I can't believe how poorly he's been treated and now the Canucks expect him to be the number one goalie and act like nothing's happened. If I was Lou I'd tell them to pound sand and hold firm to a trade request.

Oilers management has left a great deal to be desired but the goalie situation the Canucks faced was created out of incompetence and has been a screw up from the start. All these years of being in contention and coming up short has lead to a downward slide that the Canucks will desperately try to avoid.

- Sabata

Yeah I'm pretty sure luongo hasn't wanted to play in van. For awhile now... Gillis just may be one GM worse than what macT did today or lack of action as well. Even if luongo stays I can't see him playing good for years to come. They had giant eyeballs for horvat, which ill admit could end up being a decent player but not fair value for Schneider. They also made there team worse as bob Mackenzie mentioned.

It's Kevin Lowe. It's that whole veteran oilers pedigree they got the wrong ex players running mgmt. Katz must be stupid to ignore all this. Top to bottom they need mgmt like the other teams aside from few other poorly ran teams. You look at the kings, hawks, bruins, wings, even flyers. Now that's how you build good teams. It's almost like oilers have no respect in the trading world. They are also too afraid to pull them and sign the right free agents to asking price contracts unlike the teams that get ahead. Anyways a side note; that Seth jones kid has the worst cockiest attitude. Nashville will have there hands full. That kid thinks his s**t don't stink. Brutal attitude for a young high end draft pick. Better get back at the teams that didn't draft him now. Watch out for Seth jones with a vengeance boys. I hope he gets kicked out of the NHL if he keeps that attitude nobody will want him. Losers have that attitude
- Oilersfyr

More Sour grapes. Mac T has all the credentials of a rookie GM. What happened last time they went with a guy from outside? I don't like the trade down route too much, but I guess they wanted quantity in the hopes that there is a gem in there.

Also, are you slamming Seth Jones or singing his praises?

yes, pure hate, I love it. 5 coaches in 6 years would be considered bush league by some. Perception is sometimes different then reality. Vigneault coached 7 years, Canucks on average have been a pretty stable team. Luongo is rich, the Canucks made him rich. He played like sh^t, lost his job and no one wants him, NO ONE. Luongo will play if he's good enough, if he's terrible this year he will be bought out in next years window like Bryzgalov. I just love how emotional you guys get, its so personal to you types, its awesome, the distain and hate, an honor to best you on the day, truly.
- gunner2233

Yup it would be considered bush league just like the total incompetence displayed in handling the goaltender fiasco in Vancouver.

You guys have had a stable franchise the last while. It was about time wasn't it. Personally I'd rather deal with periodic instability with occasional final appearances and the odd Stanley Cup as opposed to never winning the big prize.

Worst draft I've watched for the Oilers in a long time. Man did MacT ever fall on his face. Even when shown a little opportunity.....he blew it! See - giving away second round picks - and not grabbing the next available goalie when the one you wanted was taken and the chance was there Jarry or Comrie! Holy Sh*t......MacGregor and Mactavish are stupid!
- Rhino

The stupidity started when they took Nurse before Nichushkin! Just got worse from there. Then to try and make it better they tried (and failed) to grab Coburn, which in turn makes the drafting of Nurse even more retarded!

Yeah the worst part about today was at the end when Craig MacTavish vowed not to make a single roster move before the start of next season. When he promised that in no uncertain terms the completion of the draft signalled the end of the oilers off-season moves, I thought it was incredibly hasty.

I mean, why would he go out and just say "I'm not going to take part in free agency, or make trades, or consider the waiver wire, or even use offer sheets. All of that will definitely wait until September or later"? It seems really weird for him to have gone on the record and said that.

But of course! MacT should be able to get you guys contending for division title by the start of the season, and anything else is just unacceptable!!!!

Patience, my dear Oilers fans.... patience. You will be a top team one day, but resting the hope of that on the shoulders of a couple of kids is not the best foundation. Either bring in some quality lower pairing guys, or wait until the kids are in the 24-28 age range and are in their prime...

100% Bubba. Why does everyone think that everytime the GM's are in the same room that trades should occur by the dozen? Never happens at the GM meetings either. The thing about the draft is,they are they to draft 18 year old hockey players. Sometimes, teams trade for the picks and even throw in a roster player. Pretty sure 20 other teams asked around about players, but I garauntee that 30 teams went there with the intentions of simply drafting prospects.

Probably because they didn't expect him to be there much past 30th. By that time I'd imagine they already had their 2nds in play for Coburn and didn't want to trade the farm to move up one spot. Besides, they didn't have a 3rd or a 4th at that point, nor a 4th next year. Tough to move up and not overpay when you don't have those kinds of assets.

Seriously no one else likes Yakimov?

He is 6'4, 201 pounds, gets into the dirty areas, also plays a good Power Forward type of game, He also is pretty skilled. And he is that Centre you people always complain about. This was a good pick up.

Here's my theory.

MacT was actually building the bottom part of the line up Yakimov and everyone else. He can possibly be on the LW as well, like a line of:

Hall-Nuge-Yakupov
Yakimov-Gagner-Eberle

If not, than Oilers can possibly sign Clowe to go on the second line left wing. But only time will tell of what will happen.

You are seriously delusional .. the Oilers need D and DO NOT need any more F .. Nurse was by far the best thing they could have done at number 7 ..

- lukester

You my friend are DUMB! Look at the Oilers depth chart in the minors for D and look at it for forwards..... Tell me again what they need? They NEED a RIGHT NOW dman not a prospect! ALso not getting Nichushkin is a HUGE hole they could and should have filled today with drafting him as a power forward compared to OV, Malkin and NAsh..... BUt NO Mac T poops the bed and drafts a useless (right now) player!

Neither the Canucks or Oilers bested anyone on this day. IMO the Canucks are or will be soon in far worse shape than the Oilers. They have an aging goalie in Lu that is still good but not great, the aging sisters , injury prone Kesler and let's be honest , not a lot of good prospects coming in the next year or 2. I think they will be hard pressed to make the playoffs , finally playing in a division with some very good teams.

I think the Canucks got great picks in Horvat and Shinkaruk. But the audacity of dealing Schneider without speaking to Luongo to see if he was cool to stay in Vancouver before making the deal was perhaps one of the biggest blunders in hockey history.

We will get some lower pairing guys. In FREE AGENCY!!! Really, with the limited assets we have to trade, the FREE part is where Mac T has to go to get players.
