Any opinions on how the Sabres did? I wanna hear some outside opinions. On the Oilers, I think you had a decent draft overall. Nurse will be a linchpin on the back-end for you guys for a long time. The only negative I'd say would be not going after players. I expected you guys to make a few moves for players.

Really liked the Sabres picks. I liked Nurse and Ristolainen equally and you grabbed Zadarov exactly where he should have been. Good picks.

I hope we can get Slepyshev and Yakimov over to North America soon. I'd like to see Sleppy in the AHL.

Nurse was a terrible selection. He doesn't at all fit in the team's window of development. We needed someone who could compete with error free hockey in a year or two from now, not 4 or 5 years. And Nurse is hardly a sure-fire pick. Big defensive defensemen drafted that early rarely work out. Even if he does he's destined to be a second pairing guy and Edmonton already has enough of those.

And trading down from 37 to 57 only to then trade down from 57 was completely asinine. There were supposed to be a good 50-60 solid prospects. Instead of nabbing one of those, the Oilers opted for 5 picks outside of that range. The hubris of Oilers scouting was what killed them in the 90s. They thought they were smarter than the rest of the league's scouts and kept taking off the board gambles that didn't work out. Their picks today may not have been off the board for where they were picked, but it ends up being the same thing to think they could get just as good a player 50 spots lower.

I don't really care for much of the comments on this blog, because i completely agree with you, in terms of the frustration. I'd rather MacT traded away the 7th, if he didn't like Nichushkin, because i do feel the 7th could have gotten us immediate help. I am sure players like Ryan Johansen could be acquired with the 7th overall, especially in this draft. If the oilers were not willing to trade the 7th away, then they should have at least tried to move up, landed Monahan! damn it was terrible. On top all the rumours not summing up to anything, I am glad MacT didn't make any bad deals, but i am sure if he tried harder he could have packaged a better deal for the 7th overall, go higher or get a roster player!!

Funny how you wrote this blog.I was telling peeps the oilers are gonna suck next year again cuz they luv getting draft picks.nice to draft high but at some point you actually have to do something.they don't have any complimentary pieces top fill out the team. Oilers fans Stanley cup is draft day.Lols.oh,btw, better to have two no.1 goalchies and turn 1 into a top 10 draft pick than to get nothing. Canucks did fine in the draft. Luongo will report and we are better for it all.

The teams window of development should ALWAYS be open.

Christ some of these emo fans who need immediate blockbuster deals should take a pill. Give Mac maybe a couple months before you write him off? No?

Ok enjoy freaking out.

Yes I think everyone agrees the Vancouver goaltending situation was handled brilliantly.

Never been a fan of Jay Feaster. But need to get one thing straight. He had a brilliant day at the draft yesterday. His second first round pick (Emile Poirier) is an absolute shooting star. Going to be a favorite of many hockey fans for a very long time. He was the fastest riser in the draft projections over the past few months (along with Samuel Morin) and it is ludicrous to try and trivialize the Calgary effort yesterday. They hit a home run.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

I have a feeling that Vancouver has, in fact, turned this goalie nightmare situation around. Their competitive window was already closing. The twins are UFAs next year and the team is no longer regarded as a top contender. So, I think we saw a substantial reset yesterday. I think Vancouver has committed to rebuild on the fly and the results of yesterday are pretty solid.

It is delusional for people to insist that Schnieder in nets makes the Canucks a better team than with Luongo. The reverse is not true either. The reality is both are very good at stopping the puck. Vancouver will do more deals over the summer.

But, they have certainly shook up the goaltending market. If you were not happy with your team's goaltending yesterday you know the market for a new tender just got a lot more expensive. For some, even Bryzgalov starts to look pretty good.

Perhaps this is true. But the question is could Feaster have drafted him lower? I have to believe the answer is yes, and if so, he mismanaged his assets.

Having a good gauge of where other teams value players at the draft is just as important as having a good gauge of where players should be at the draft.
