If you're trading Gardiner for 5 you can get someone better than Domi.

Phaneuf is about to be a UFA after this year and get's exposed defensively all the time. I'm not saying he's terrible but I think Leaf fans are over valuing him quite a bit. He plays big minutes in TO because he has to! Dion could become a better D man in the future but he needs to be insulated. Dion is not a #1 D man on most other teams, he's ideally a #2 guy.

The #5 pick is way more valuable because you get a young player that will be in your organization for 8+ years on a cheap contract. Dion has 1 year remaining at $6.5 and then is a UFA. He could walk easily.

The Leafs want to resign him at a LOWER cap # because they know he isn't worth the money he's being paid right now.

I don't disagree with anything you've said here - except that Leaf fans over value him. I don't think Leaf fans overvalue him at all.. I think Calgary overpaid him - and the Leafs inherited the contract with the player. He's a 5M$ player all day long.

Now with that said, please provide me the list of 25 other defensemen in the league who are overall better than Phaneuf. And if your list includes Jared Cowan or PK Subban I know you are smoking cheap stuff.

I found an old hockey book in my attic a while ago. It was called NHL Stars of 1995 or some poop like that. They had a write up for each team and that was one of the captions under the King's page.

Turris was Ottawa's best player in the playoffs. They took Montreal apart in the first round and advanced to the second round. Better result than any other Canadian team in the playoffs. Scoreboard and results matter.

I think Franson, as an RFA, might be the guy the leafs are considering moving.

I'd be hesitant, I think I'd rather trade a few players and try and take a guy like McBain in the process. They're not high on him and he needs a change of scenery

Gardiner, Ashton, 21st for 5th McBain.
