So if not Dion then what would it take to get the fifth pick?

Franson 21st and Ashton?

- cracka

Phaneuf is about to be a UFA after this year and get's exposed defensively all the time. I'm not saying he's terrible but I think Leaf fans are over valuing him quite a bit. He plays big minutes in TO because he has to! Dion could become a better D man in the future but he needs to be insulated. Dion is not a #1 D man on most other teams, he's ideally a #2 guy.

The #5 pick is way more valuable because you get a young player that will be in your organization for 8+ years on a cheap contract. Dion has 1 year remaining at $6.5 and then is a UFA. He could walk easily.

The Leafs want to resign him at a LOWER cap # because they know he isn't worth the money he's being paid right now.

I think Leafs want to move up to grab Anthony Mantha. That kid is a legit beast.

He looks to be pretty good.... some questions regarding his attitude and coachability, but he certainly looks to be the real deal...

Should it not be a constitutional right for the Leafs to have first right of refusal for any offspring of a former player to play on any Toronto sports team?

I totally agree. His stint last season wasn't as bad as people say. His 1st 5 games he did very good and the next 8 he struggled. You can't write off a defenseman after only 15 games, especially when he was thrown into a role he wasn't prepared for.
- coolehmon41

Maybe, but you also can't pencil in a guy who's shown he's not ready.

The only way trading Dion makes sense is if Nonis has another move to replace his minutes and leadership in his back pocket.

I'm sure Caryle will straighten him out hahaha. But he's a big body at 6'4. Something we lack on the wing. JVR is the only one.

Depends.

If it's Max Domi, I wouldn't be opposed.

If it's Junior McCabe, pass....

Carolina has 3 offers for the 5th pick and expects to have 5 or 6 trade options to consider. Decision likely just before first selection.

That's why you have first right of refusal. Aki Junior would not be welcome.

That's terrible right there. Bad bad committee.
- djamon

yup - there's an understatement.

almost everyone talking about adding a solid shutdown type guy to play with Dion,
so now trade Dion for a unsure thing who's probably a minimum of two years from being top 6 forward...

and take your only top 2 defenseman and replace him with what?

interesting - the Leaf fans. The guy has a brain cramp in overtime of one playoff game and you want to run him out of town...

is it any wonder the high end FA don't want to sign in Toronto?

c'mon people, Dion has his faults, and yes he's a little overpriced... but who exactly is going to be as effective playing the minutes he played with the partners he's had?

I'm certainly not his biggest fan... but he does just fine playing against other teams top players when he doesn't go over 23-24 minutes. So why not provide him support instead of dreaming in technicolor about falling the Oiler's model.
What is this, the Unholy Goalie school of management.

Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez.

PS What is Edmonton looking for in order to move out of the basement?

Most of this is a load of garbage.

He's a top 10 d-man in the league...period. He's paid like one and he produces like one. Maybe his minutes need to be scaled back from 26 to 22, and he needs to be paired with someone other than Mike f!cking Kostka. Other than that...he's been fantastic for the Leafs.

The only way he SHOULD be traded is if he's told the Leafs he won't re-sign, or he's thrown some crazy number out there for his next contract.

and that's a big question mark as well.

who's he gonna replace him with - Letang at 7M+? I'm not taking a shot at you here at all.. this whole concept of dealing you "far and away most valuable defenseman" for a draft pick is idiotic.

that's absolutely true....

problem is you have to do a awful lot of building around him....

you know - like two top defensemen, and two 3/4 guys.

and a Vezina winning goaltender.

I agree. Letang is intriguing, but he scares the crap outta me. Who turns down 56m to play for the Pens the next 8 years??

Rutherford has the rep of being a smart man and a shrewd judge of talent. Does anybody think that he would give up the #5 pick for Phaneuf? Ludicrous!

If the Canes are headed in that direction do you not think that Shero is talking about Letang in exchange for the #5 plus.
