Nurse is a safe pick with a lower ceiling. Ristolainen and Pulock have higher ceilings than Nurse, but Nurse is much lower-risk to end up being a top-4 guy.
- JAKEw1234

Actually, the converse is true. Ristolainen is seen as the safe pick. Nurse's potential to become a much better player as he matures and develops is why teams have him so high.

Nurse has basically dominated by his physical gifts thus far, the thought is, as he learns and develops in technique he will get better.

Holland wants a top 2/3 defender, but they're hard to find.
Coburn is about to be traded for Shea Weber !!!

He (MJL) is playing a double standard game with you. Salaries and cap hits are pretty close now post CBA. He wants you to compare a post CBA signing to his examples which were before.
- phillydentist

Suter and Weber signed under the old CBA. regardless of which CBA it was signed under, the Pens got Letang for cheap. he could've easily chosen to play out his deal, and test Free Agency. In which he undoubtedly, could've commanded more.

Here is the breakdown.

Letang signed an 8 year deal for 58M.

The first 8 years of Suter's deal is for 80M

The first 8 years of Weber's deal, totals 92M

fucale may be a great goalie someday, but this is not the draft to take him before #20 or so, from every thing i've heard/read.

I'm talking cap hits. You are correct. Salary is great but the "hit" is what's important for building your team.
- stveshdy

A player does not negotiate for a Cap hit. They negotiate for Salary. The Pens got Letang for a really good deal.

They just showed Nurse telling what he learned from uncle McNabb just now on NHLN.

All I can picture is Nurse with a stupid grin on his face after a mistake leading to a goal against.

I think Ristolainen's ceiling is top-pairing shut-down dman. Or as some has said, "Finnish Pronger" I personally don't like the Nurse hype and truly believe he'll end up a top-4 guy at best. But only the future can tell.

I think it is a little overplayed the McNabb angle. McNabb is his uncle by marriage. I'm sure you'll get some stupid tweet from Donovan if Darnell is drafted by the Flyers, however.

Pre CBA vs Post CBA.

You think those guys get those deals now? No way.

You always win your little arguments in your own mind because of these built in double standards.

I completely understand what your saying. I'm just talking from a cap hit point of view. That's what matters. Every team tries to get it as low as possible.

Top Free Agents are still going to command top Dollar. The players who are going to see the salary crunch are the middle class of NHL players. This was a much talked about subject through the course of the lockout.

Letang could've chosen to test Free Agency after this Season, and been a top player. With the value of Free Agent defenseman of his ability, he could've gotten more money. Great deal for the Pens.

He chose to sign because it was a fair market deal or very close to it. If he thought he could make more, he would've tested the market and waited. Also, only Pitt is able to give him 8 years, one more than any other team. It was a fair deal not a steal.

From what I've read on the other boards, most think it was an overpayment but I disagree there. It was fair.
