If we were to judge the signing in a vacuum, sure it looks decent. But with the overall cap thing over in Pitty I have a feeling it is going to be tight?

Alot would depend on the NMC though - is it confirmed that it is a 15 team NMC?

- Bearintheforest

Top teams with top players are always going to be tight to the Cap.

Edmonton is at 7, Calgary is at 6

I don't know. However, if Edmonton who picks at #6 (who needs help on defense) supposedly wants Coburn, Read, and 11 for #6 why would Carolina accept a lower offer at #5?
- stveshdy

Because Edmonton might've been asking for an unrealisitc amount. Carolina's supposed asking price is a top-4 Dman and a 1st rounder, so I don't see why we'd have to add so much more to the price they're asking for. It'd be like going to buy some bread, having the guy tell you the price is $3 for the loaf, and saying you'll pay him $5. Doesn't really make sense to have to overpay on an apparent set price.

Whatever happens today, I don't want the 11th or Gus traded as part of any deals.

Curious to see how Gus develops with the Flyers.

Wouldn;t be amazed if the NHL asked teams to hold off announcing anything until the draft starts

Most likely. Helps ratings.

That deal is a flat out steal for the Pens to get Letang for that.
- MJL

Still doesn't change the fact that they're paying 3 players almost half of their cap.

Yes, and they obviously should. But wouldn't you concur that there are cases where it could become too tight?

I'm sure that they're not looking for just any top 4 defenseman. They would obviously have to agree to Coburn.

Will see. I think if its that simple the Flyers will make that trade. Its a no brainer for them to move up six spots and dump salary.

Other defenseman out there to upgrade besides Coburn.

Others like Hartnell. I would make that trade but Vancouver needs to shed salary I believe.
- stveshdy

Hartnell is marginally cheaper than Edler. Hartnell has a very reasonable cap hit. I don't know how much lower than that they want to go. There are other areas that they could better shed cap (I.e Luongo or Schnieder).

When those 3 players are Malkin, Crosby, and Letang. That's okay. A team can always make moves needed for Cap flexibility. Those players come first.

You like to have some flexibility. But I look at the Pens roster, and I see a lot of potential moves they could make to get that flexibility if needed.

If there is another deal to be had, then yes there are theoretically others.

That's if Vancouver wants an older forward such as Hartnell. I know they want to get bigger but his age could play a factor into that deal. For the Flyers sake I hope it happens.

But as proven when you play a series and Malkin, Crosby, and Letang go cold, then there's trouble in river city.

I guarantee you they already have offers for Edler better then Hartnell

What's better than a 37 goal-scoring power forward? The age is a factor, but Hartnell is still one of the top PWFs in the league.

My only issue is Pittsburgh was suppose to have some really young skilled defenseman. Not sure why they spend that kind of money on Letang. Probably couldn't get a fair deal from other teams?
