Ek still seems to think he will def get moved

Carolina GM has stated sekera will be in their top 4

The Edmonton deal fell through

Who are their options now?

- Just5

I don't know.
I don't really understand what the details are on Coburn's NTC.

I mean if he would accept a trade to Edmonton or Carolina, he might accept a trade anywhere.

I kept thinking how ironic it would be if homer finally worked out a deal with Edmvand then Coburn nixed it with his NTC.

I'm happy with Morin at 11. I was hoping for a big guy, either Morin or Zadorov. I've been trying to dig to find the basic differences between the who which led the Flyers to ultimately choose Morin over Zadorov (I would have the same curiosities if they chose Zadorov).

What are your opinions on this?

- mikel33

Unless they're selecting in the top 5-10 I really don't care who they draft. We're just gonna trade them in a few years anyway.

Not with Bernier and Schneider off the table.

That's what makes me nervous.

- Scoob

I'd have loved to grab either of them, but it didn't work out. I also agree with Bradley's thoughts on not overpaying for goalies in trades...not that either NJ or Toronto overpaid for their guys, but the Flyers needed to get depth in the system desperately.

that would take a guy like schenn...that's how highly they regard Gibson.
- isaiah520

Who wouldn't? He was stellar for the US at the WJC and is a very talented kid...but no way I trade Schenn for an unproven goalie.

the kid is fluid

every move he makes looks smooth. seems surprisingly in control of his body for being that big and that young. no panic in his game and the first passes out of the zone are beauties.

combine that with his mean streak and there is just a boatload of potential, imo.

*please note i didnt know crap about him til yesterday but watched a ton of video after the draft, so take what i say with a grain of salt

Tim Thomas would be a nice stop gap. Plays a style of hockey similar to the Flyers defense. Erratic and unpredictable...

He's a good goalie and could mentor Mason. I like it.

I also like Halak. I like anything outside of names we've already tried.

hes a scrapper that cant score in the whl....i dont see how that is going to translate into the NHL.... hopefully the flyers know more than i do, but their track record outside of the first two rounds has been poop.
- PhillaBully

Homer compared the kid to Zac Rinaldo. The same Zac Rinaldo the Flyers drafted in the 6th round.

I'm happy to be wrong on this (it's not like I get anything if I'm right), but it simply feels like they wasted the pick on a kid who looks like he's gonna top out in the AHL.

Personally, I don't think they have to do much with the goaltending. They especially don't need to overpay.

Ryan Miller's a free agent after next season. So is Jaroslav Halak.

At some point, those teams are going to look at their situations and ask the obvious question: Do we need these guys or not? Are we going to extend them or look for something else in the net?

There are still many, many options in play for the Flyers, based on what they're willing to pay.

That's very likely the case. In the way of thinking the Flyers employed, getting a NHL 4th liner is better than getting an AHL all star.

Me? I'd rather roll the dice on a guy like Lodge or Kurjawiski

- Jsaquella

People are quick to allude to the Garret Klotz pick in 2007, but just like w/ Klotz, the Flyers must feel that Goulbourne also has some possibleupside to him.

I'm sure Bruins fans were pretty outraged after they took a potentially costly gamble on a 'goon' with a hunched back from Western Canada at 50th-overall in 2006 with skilled guys like Anisimov and D!ck Axelsson still on the board. They seem to be fine with that pick now.

It's just way too early to judge.

I don't get this. You're willing to deplete the defense in order to sign your 2nd-line center?

What does your blue-line look like after you've gotten rid of Coburn+Meszy and added Vinny?

- steelydan

I think by adding Vinny it makes it easier to trade one of the younger centers for a defenseman. Doesn't that make Coutourier or Schenn a little more expendable in a trade for a defenseman? Not saying that Is what I want to do but it could be their thinking. What kind of return would Cout/Schenn plus Coburn bring back???

At first I was disappointed with Morin at #11. There were rumours of our interest in him, I just didn't think we'd pass on both Pulock and Zadorov to grab him. Hearing Montreal wanted to trade up for him, it wasn't just blind obsession with drafting a hulking project d-man. With Pulock to the Isles and Zadorov to the Sabres, we'll see in 5 years if we picked the right guy.

Hagg in the 2nd round I loved. Projected to be in the 20s in the 1st round, he has a lot of potential. Good size and mobility, and is Swede. I'm not sure NHL comparables, but possibly compare him to Alex Edler?

Speaking of Edler. If we do win out the Vinny bidding, he is our #2 centre no doubt. Depending on what we do in regards to guys like Coburn and Read, I could see BSchenn going to Vancouver in a deal for Edler. Maybe we flip Read and Coburn to Anaheim for Ryan, BSchenn to Vancouver for Edler, and let a kid or two fill out the bottom lines? Just random thoughts, no validation behind any of this.

Ryan-Giroux-Voracek
Hartnell-Lecavalier-Simmonds
Gagne-Couturier-Talbot
McGinn-Laughton-Rinaldo
Rosehill

Timonen-Schenn
Edler-Streit
Grossmann-Gustafsson

Homer did say he wants to get bigger up front, likely to mimic the Bruins. Lean on teams, grind them, wear them down. Ryan, Voracek, Hartnell, Simmonds, Vinny with Giroux up front certainly addresses that. Edler and Streit upgrade the defense, and can help us going forward when Kimmo retires.

Fully agree. Let's see what Mason can do in a full season as our starter. Give him a 1B at most. If he falters, Miller, Hiller, Halak, and others might make it to UFA next summer.

Don't worry crimson, every post you make is taken with a salt lick.

It's good to hear though that Morin might have been a stronger pick than at first believed. I'll give them the beneift of the doubt as they do draft well in the first round. I'm still a bit bummed that they didn't get a shot at Nichuskin, but that's my issue.

I'm pleased we didn't trade Coburn. Let some of the fervor die down and once people realize there isn't his caliber of player in FA they'll come knocking... Do not give away one of our top 4 who eats moster minutes without a nice return!

Yeah, I didn't even mention Jonas Hiller -- there are way too many options out there, realistic options, for me to worry about goaltending just yet.

Truthfully, I'm actually far more worried about 2LW/3LW -- we kinda need another forward who can pop in 20 or so goals on the left side.

Flyers should stay away from Thoms. Who knows what kind of shape he's in at this point plus his commitment is questionable.

Crims will be happy to hear it, so here goes:

The guy I hear most often when draftniks compare Robert Hagg to NHLers is Kim Johnsson

The game shape is the concern for me. The guy's been off the ice for a year now, gotta think it'd take some time to get his legs under him again.

yeah i admit as Nichy was falling i was hoping he'd drop to 11. but looking back, i think Morin still might be the smarter choice in the long run
