Good analysis. I agree. I think this luongo situation costs gillis his job. Now u have luongo on this long contract and u can't buy him out because u traded the other guy. I think van city is on the down slope
- Hextall271

Nucks ownership refused to amnesty Luongo for financial reasons. No other GM would give up assets for that contract. Gillis had to trade Schneider. Gillis would be a much better GM if Comcast owned the Nucks.

Holmgren has the benefit of being able to spend up to the cap limit every year. Whatever mistakes he makes, Snider is willing to bail him out with $$.

I dont think acquiring Pietro is all too realistic. The blues HAVE to sign him, right? They have to be scared to death of potential offer sheets. Esp if Philly doesnt land Lecavalier and all the cap space that would come with that

The Blues aren't going to let Pietro walk and they are likely not going to trade him.

I think the whole discussion is a non-starter for STL.

For anyone who follows me on twitter, I think its safe to say I wasnt too happy with Morin at 11 yesterday. Still not happy, but I have calmed down and I am now going to try to be positive. This kid is enormous, for his size he can skate, is a hell of a fighter, is nasty, and is very confident. If he can develop even a smidgen of offensive ability I think he will make a pretty decent d-man.

Best case scenario: He can continue his rapid development by refining his offensive game, bringing a big shot, and being productive in all situations, while not changing his tenacity. Ends up like a Pronger or a Chara. Likelihood: doubtful

Worst case scenario: His game never fully develops, his offensive game NEVER develops, his ability at the JR level was overblown because of his size, and he struggles at the NHL level. Only positive trait is his fighting ability. Ends up like Chris McCallister or Nolan Yonkman. Likelihood: Doubtful

My guess: He ends up developing a bit more, but never really blossoms offensively, although his shot ends up being pretty good. He adds weight and becomes mean and nasty, a female dog to play against, who is also a great leader. Ends up like Hal Gill in his prime or a bigger, meaner Coburn.

I thought they reached for Morin and continue to think so.

I've heard the rumors about MTL looking to move up to get Morin and I hope that is true, instead of wondering if Paul Holmgren and the Flyers are really that unable to think outside the box with the draft.

The kid they picked in the 3rd round was an absolute reach.

Then maybe Gillis shouldn't have signed Luongo to the contract in the first place.

It's easy to take the tact that "Paul Holmgren has it easy," but he doesn't. Teams, agents and players use the fact that the Flyers have financial resources to extract more in contract negotiations and trade scenarios.

Is it better to have that than have it be the other way? Sure. But just because you have money doesn't mean it's always going to work out for you -- look at Pittsburgh right now. Because they have money now with their new stadium, none of their best players are cutting them any breaks on salary, and they're about to be locked into three contracts of 8 years in length at $7.25 million per.

No I agree.. If he peaks as a Hal Gill in his prime it is better than a bust.

Here was biggest qualm yesterday. The Flyers are in desperate need of a puck moving/offensive d-man. We have an abundance of physical stay at home guys.

So in a trade scenario, which is harder to acquire, a physical, stay at home d-man, or a dynamic offensive d-man/puck mover?

I was a big advocate for selecting Pulock, and still wish they would of. I think he is gonna be a hell of a player for the Islanders (who I think made a hell of a deal in getting Clutterbuck, Jesus.... Clutterbuck and Martin )

I am disappointed with the selection, but I want to stay positive.

Here's my bottom line on the draft. I think it's cool that a lot of people have taken an interest in the players in the draft. Spent time looking a highlight films, reading scouting reports. Taking in all the information they can find and forming an opinion. That's what we're here for. To give our opinions. But the blunt truth is, that there isn't really any fan posting on this site, that is qualified to state what's a good pick, and what isn't. Certainly can have an opinion. Even for the best of professional talent evaluators working for NHL teams. The Draft is a crapshoot. Times that factor ten fold for fans assessing a player in the draft. I undertand the disapointment in some of the picks. But the Flyers obviously had their reasons for choosing those players. Just have to wait and see what happens. Time will tell if they made good picks or not.

I think they absolutely targeted Morin, as many others have said. Which is fine.

I just think they didn't have to pick him at 11. That is, unless they were unable to move back because another team who coveted that player blocked them from doing so. I really hope that's the case here and not "gee, we didn't even think we could move back to get this guy".

I still thought, leading up to that pick, that once Horvat was gone, I thought they might go for Max Domi.

Kunitz is 33, got a 4 year deal, and on any other team wont be playing with Crosby. You dont think he realizes that he has a good thing going for him?

Just to add some perspective, not comparing any of the players to anybody. But drafting Peter Forsberg in the first round was considered a reach at the time.

It's impossible to tell what kind of needs this team is going to have in 3-5 years from now. What if Ghost develops into a very good PP QB and offensive defenseman? What if Streit plays great for them over the next 4 years? What if Gus or Alt develop a good offensive game? What if Grossmann and Coburn are both gone? What if Luke Schenn develops concussion problems? Point is you never know

The trouble for Gillis is, that he could have moved Luongo at the TDL and was not happy with the return. Once he failed to move the contract at the TDL, he was either going to have to buy out it out or trade Schneider.
