the point isnt winning next year. Or even the year after
Every good team has to take steps backwards. Chicago, Pittsburgh, LA all did it and were better off for it. The Islanders are on the cusp of it.
The problem is so many of this fan base dont understand that, yourself included.
Were all desperate for a winner, and I understand that. But this group wasnt doing it, and you damn sure cant rebuild a team in a year. The league just isnt like that anymore.
You have to take a step backwards to make that leap forward. Its time for the Sabres to do that.
And if it hurts for you to watch it, then Id recommend not watching next year because I dont see it being pretty. Even this year was too pretty for my liking - CaptPantalones
How many more times do we need to take a step back? how many more times do we need to hear "it takes time"? you look at this a totally differant way then most of us do. This team has taken enough steps backwards. |

This is so funny all this speculation, Sabres will do nothing, because they have nothing to give really. Face it, by finishing where they did, Sabrs screwed themselves again. |

I felt that the last 6 years we saw glimpses of what the team could do if they were focused and dedicated. Teased so to speak because whenever they would be close to getting it together and turning the corner, the team did not have the heart or desire to sustain anything.
I am all for fresh new faces and showing the old core the door
This team still had enough talent over the last 6 years to make the playoffs and win a series here and there. They were lacking heart, and sacrifice.

And after failing yet again we will listen to another bulls$$t press conference at the end of the year with Darcy saying the same crap and Black agreeing with him. It will never change until Darcy is gone, it's a shame Pegula can't see it. |

And when they do nothing, they will be the next "core" out the door. - SABRES 89
So do we want to tank this year and have a chance of developing young talent (can't do that without the kids getting minutes)? This seems to be the concensus theme on these threads...all 50 of them by Garth alone in the last week...and we have are the only team with over 1,000 responses to every duplicitous thing that gets posted about our team.
OR do we get Vinny, Nathan, Letang, etc, etc, etc, and tank the year with a bunch of Leino-like retreads who aren't here to prove themselves?
Youth! Now! NO chance of developing a GOOD core if we don't give them playing time, and most folks responding on HB seem to be raking Darcy over the coals for trying the "build around the core" route. |

Nothing to give? 2 1sts, at least two top players, an overpaid yet talented winger (Stafford), Myers, and even Hodgson if the price is right. Plenty to give but part of the problem is other teams have a lot to give too, along with buyouts and FA. |

Darcy should be thrown off the Peace Bridge, does that tell you how I feel about Darcy and his rebuilding idea's. |

you think that was a step back?
That was NOTHING but underachieving. That was Regier stubbornly building around the same guys.
Now he understands that the group he thought he could win it all with, isnt going to get it done.
This is truly a step back. There is a giant difference between intentionally being bad and having a team fail to meet expectations.
As for Regier, your going to have to deal with him for at least another 2 years IMO. If this rebuild doesnt work, then you might see a new GM reap the benefits (ala Bowman/Tallon, Burke/Nonis) |

I'm willing to give the man the benefit of this year's draft---with such talent, how bad can he screw it up?
Last year's draft he nailed it, I think, and at least Armia and Pysyk are going to be solid core pieces. How can he fudge this year? Going after Fucale in round 1 would do it...

Darcy understands nothing he's just good at talking s$$t and for some reason guys like Golisano and Pegula listen to him. He's proven he can't spend wisely and when he doesn't have money to spend, still can't get it together. |

Fucale doesnt fudge it, IF he moves up to draft him later in round 1.
There really isnt a big way to screw this draft up. Top 10 is loaded and 11-20 is solid. If he trades up, its a homerun.
If he sits where he is, its a solid double at least |

This needs to be quoted for truth.
While I don't want Regier behind the wheel for this rebuild, there's nothing I can do about that. That falls on Pegula and his cluelessness as an NHL owner. This is the first "proper" rebuild that the Sabres are facing. Previous years have been underachieving teams and failed expectations. The difference this year is that it should be a PLANNED disaster.
It's just like in the NFL. You can't be successful unless you suck for awhile and draft well. That's just how it is. The Sabres (like the Bills) have never sucked enough to get over the hump. They've been just mediocre enough to not get the "game changers." |

I disagree to an extent
the last 2 years he is much better at trades aside from this or that
the ott trade was good
the rr trade was good, he just regressed here
kassion for coho and sulzer was a steal
he moved up to get girgen
nice return for pommer
nice long term returns for leopold and rr
signing undrafted free agents
flynn
ruhwedel
makarov
schaller
he should have made a move here and there when the team was slumping over the last 2 years
his first rd picks have been much better myers on |
